Anybody got any decent advice on brands or designs of bike lock?

Are there any strong recommendations or is there anything to avoid?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Motorcycle or bicycle? To be honest bike locks are just a delaying tactic nowadays, as if someone is determined to steal your bike they will almost certainly succeed. These portable angle grinders that thief’s carry can be through any bike lock in very little time.

Have a Kryptonite D lock and a Kryptonite chain and padlock I carry in the saddle bag on the bike... but tbf a decent 18v portable angle grinder would destroy them in seconds.

As hinted above it’s worth spending a good amount on quality locks. Whilst mention has been made about a “ delaying tactic” you’ve more chance of getting a full payout from your insurance company, assuming you’ve insured it/ them I would have thought with a quality lock (approved) having been fitted.

Like everybody else has said a good 18v grinder will make mincemeat of most locks. However if you are aboard the apple train I would recommend trying to fix an AirTag on it somewhere, perhaps down the seat post or disguised behind a sticker. Whilst I’m sure most professional gangs would probably be on the look out for AirTags or similar , if you are unfortunate enough to have it nicked by a chancer at least you may be able to get it back if you are lucky , especially in the first 48 hrs or so

Also Kryptonite D-lock. Got it from argos for around 30 quid.

Just be aware that a portable angle grinder will get through a bike lock in seconds, just thought I’d let you know in case nobody else mentions it!

Whatever lock you get make sure you keep it lubricated with wd40 or similar.

Another recommendation for Kryptonite. I still wouldn’t leave any of my bikes in Norwich (where I live) though. I use it at work.

Lock only prevents opportunists thief, like anything in life if someone wants to steal something they'll find a way. Always try and keep the bike locked away securely, out of sight if possible.

It all depends on where you are, what you're locking, how long for, can you leave a lock or do you need to carry it round, etc

You may not be aware but most locks can be pretty easily chopped with an angle grinder. That's noisy and obvious though so most thieves tend to use bolt croppers unless you've locked up somewhere unobserved. If you want something that croppers can't get through then you probably want a 16mm (or bigger) d-lock (although there are a few hardened steel alternatives like the Abus Granit).

Or, get a brompton and just take it in places with you. Problem solved.

Expensive but worth it if your bike or motorbike is worth a lot of money, these locks are amazing

Never put WD40 inside a lock. It's a solvent, not a lubricant. It will clean away the oil and grease and can attract dirt - it will shorten the life span of your lock.

A bit of silicon lube is what you want.

Is the OP wondering which lock to buy? Or is he going to s**g it to destruction?

I honestly have no previous re-criminations It was a random generated for me when I tried to use another name containing `claret`, and it recommended `criminalclaret`. It just kept it and that was it haha

However I do a fair bit of cycling and have had bikes stolen, so sadly have some prior experiences.

Just buy a s**t bike and leave it next to good ones with a lock on, nobody will nick it and it saves buying a lock

Never seen as many bikes in my life as in Amsterdam. Almost every single one of them was a wreck. Apparantly the locals have a good bike and a crap one - the crap one is so they can park it without fear of it being stolen.
