Banking your season ticket

We have two Upper North season tickets which would cost as bought on the day seats £50 each.
I know living in Wokingham with a part-time job some games we won't be able to get to.So I phoned the ticket office to enquire about the system for banking our seats.Simple enough phone in using Clarets number and that's the deal done .Because its a season ticket with 19 games on it its calculated the club give you £13 back as we are over 65.
The balance is put into you account against future ticket or merchandise purchases
The idea is great but the amount given is not.As these tickets have a true value of £100 I feel £50 paid to us to be fairer even for allowing administrator charges this is still a tidy return seats that will have been sold twice.

Didn’t quite follow the whole post, but if they’ve divided the cost (to you) of your season ticket by the number of home games, they’ve given you back what you paid for it. That seems fair.

If you sold back every game at £25 each you’d end up with £475.
How much was the original season ticket?

In what world do you think you should get back more than you paid for it!

Essentially you want to be paid for reserving your seat for a small number of games a season?

So if I’m following correctly you are expecting a refund of £50 for a seat you have paid £19 for? (Assuming got ST as part of early bird £290 is the most for an o65 which works £19 per game)

If you paid for a concession seat on a plane or train and got a refund, would you want the price of an adult back as that’s what they could resell it as?

I think you should sell them back to the club, the club could then give them out as complimentary tickets and invoice you for the match day price of the ticket.

Does this sound silly ? I will give you a clue it isn't quite as silly as your'e suggestion. How do you work out the club should give you more money back then you have paid ?

Maybe you could buy 1000 senior season tickets and make a few grand each season out of the club paying you more

Seriously tho, doesn’t seem all that bad tbf. Tickets COULD have a value of £50, but if they go to a junior or a senior they won’t.

This hasn’t gone the way you expected has it?

There's an admin fee to pay too when you sell back your seat for a game and I believe it can only be done if the game is sold out

I don't think it's snidey, as you suggest - but a rational response to your expectation that the club actually pay you the uplift on full adult price value.

Agree a share of what we pay is fair, but the admin fee is not, because the club is guaranteed to be quids in when it re-sells the seat for a much higher walk-on price. That’s just greed. Haven’t seem the detail but I am guessing the admin fee is the same for everyone, meaning it is “regressive”, i.e. a bigger share of the ticket price for OAPe and children who have often less dosh to start off with.

They’ll sell the OAP / kids seat to an adult too, making it even more profitable. Scrap the admin fee. Something for the supporter’s liaison group.

Can’t say I agree Crosspool. The system, and presumably technology that supports it (I’m assuming you can do this online) will not have come for free. And then throughout the year you have to pay staff to deal with Woodley calling and issuing a load of re-sale tickets for each game that otherwise wouldn’t have happened when this wasn’t an option.

It also works both ways. I have an adult season ticket but if I put it up for exchange it could go to an OAP or Junior, so they’ll made a loss.

The administration fee likely counterbalances this scenario as well as paying for the technology and labour costs to implement the system. To warrant this type of investment and improvement in fan experience there has to be a return.

Although I agree about the fee being potentially regressive so it could potentially be variable based on value.

If I were to sell mine back through the ticket exchange, I'd receive £10.17 back in credit should they work to the penny. The club could then sell that ticket for £50.

If I had an adult seat, then I'd receive £24.81 and the club could then potentially sell it to a concession for £30.

If an average of 500 return their seats each game (more for some games than others, a lot in half term, evenings etc), that is nearly 10,000 seats at lets say £35 average walk on price so that is £350,000 income for the club, entirely because we have taken the effort to sell our seats back.

A bit of IT to facilitate a ticket exchange even if paid to a third party won’t be anything like that cost, they'll be quids in and don’t need an admin fee, plus it isn’t cash handed back its a credit. That’s all I am saying. Still good to have the system though.

It’s hard to work out the maths, but I’m pretty sure my ST is £30.47 per game and judging by the Sheff United prices a walk on U18 would be £15 for the same ticket.

So without the admin fee, the club lose £15.47 on any resale to a U18. With it, they lose £2.47.

Of course they’d profit in an “upgrade” scenario but I would imagine the vast majority of ST holders fall in to Adult category so that is a real prospect re-sale without an admin fee become loss making.

But you’d hope if it turns out to be excessive it would be reviewed next season.

Can you actually buy an under 18 ticket for a seat that's being resold?

I do think the admin fee is a little grubby but for everyone who buys a season ticket because they go to every game it's a small thing in exchange for being able to get money back for a game you can't get to. Unfortunately when there's a waiting list for season tickets and sell outs for most games I don't think season ticket holders who don't go to many games is a market the club should cater to.

I suppose the question is that if the club sells a ticket for £50, how much of that money should go to the club and how much should go to the person who bought it cheap and would now like to make a profit?

I'm mildly surprised that they allow you any profit at all. I thought re-selling at a profit was illegal.

The point of allowing reselling of season tickets isn't for the benefit of season ticket holders, who have always worked on the basis that the discount is compensation for missing some games, but it's for the benefit of non-season ticket holders who couldn't otherwise get on.

“A bit of IT” ??

I’m sure that could be the case if you had a decent ticketing system and quality and clean customer data too.
But Burnley clearly haven’t so anything we try and do internally is going to be a big piece of work and probably a complete rebuild which i don’t think there’s any appetite for them to do in the club.
This also means giving anything new like a ticket exchange system to a 3rd party is also a non starter as they would have the same issue to deal with the poor quality customer data and also in getting regular feeds of data from the club which they would need (would all be manual feeds etc)

Reason we are charging an admin fee has got to be that we have people in the ticket office having to manually process exchanges.

I have been waiting for this type of thread since the seat resell was announced

The one thing I question is the club charging the season ticket holder a fee if the seat is resold - there is enough margin (as has been identified by the OP) in the resale to cover that cost, particularly given the new purchaser has likely paid for a club membership

The likelihood of private ticket transfer transactions is likely to increase as a result

Of course one way to stop that would be facial recognition systems, and I would not be surprised to see that become the norm in the next few years, it is already installed at some clubs, given that this is a general issue across the Premier League

Whilst I get the clubs points of dividing your season ticket cost and crediting that to you minus a very dodgy fee. It does not really incentivise you to bother. Certainly will not make me interested.
I may be lucky this year and be invited into corporate a few times this season, so will just leave my seat empty or offer it to someone for free.

You write a lot of posts on here about how you save money so it seems foolish to turn down a tenner whilst also depriving a supporter the opportunity to attend the game and the club from making a financial gain. All because there’s an admin fee?
