About him getting to know Tony Bennett well because of his dad, is there ann artist/group you now like that your parents played?
I thought I was too cool as a young man to like nat King Cole whom my parents never stopped playing, now I listen to him regularly, what a voice!

Dad - singers such as Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, never liked them but do now. He was also a huge Ella Fitzgerald fan and I do love listening to her.

My mum was more Shirley Bassey - another great performer.

Always like a bit of Nat King.

Strong childhood memory of listening to Pink Floyd (specifically Money) in the car with my dad. Another is my mum and dad singing along to Meatloaf's Paradise By The Dashboard Light.

Not a particular artist but he loved brass and military bands and I love the horn sections in modern music. Chicago were my favourites for many years, the Tower of Power horns(who I saw with Huey Lewis & the News), the New York Affordables(Billy Joel), Earth, Wind and Power horns(became Phenix horns) and the Muscle Shoals horns(who performed for so many that recorded at Muscle Shoals.

Dad was into jazz and old bluesmen, he would sing along to tapes of some unfathomable stuff while in the kitchen but the only stuff I can remember and like would be The Ink Spots and Glen Miller.

For me and the Mrs that was, indeed still is, 'our' song and was the one we chose for the first dance on our wedding day; perhaps not the most apropriate lyrics for the ocassion.

An ex poster on the previous board, Halifax88 & myself once emptied the Coach & Horses in town by singing that on karaoke.....

I'm 71 now and just love to hear virtually any song by Englebert Humperdinck. Think he has/ had a wonderful voice but during his heyday in previous decades I didn't appreciate him at all.

Didn’t appreciate glen Campbell as a youngster, but I do now.

Didn’t gel with Springsteen until about 90/91. Made up for it since tho….

Ralph Vaughan Williams, although it was my discovery, nothing to do with my parents.

Apparently though my father was a fan, my mother less so. One year in the 1950s he bought a Vaughan Williams box set (this was in the days of vinyl of course) for her Christmas present. I understand this generosity did not go down too well with my mother.

Brook Benton was a favourite of my mum.

Think I've mentioned this before, but I never appreciated listening to my dad's Nina Simone records as a kid in the sixties - different story now though.

As the OP said Nat King Cole but the british version of him Matt Munro was equally good, velvet voice.

The Kinks, The Seekers, and a couple of Jim Reeves songs. Will never forget playing some CDs to me dad, in his final days with cancer.
He sang along to "Precious Lord" and "Distant drums" He passed away a few days later. Very apt we played them at his cremation.

Delius and Debussy. My dad’s trad jazz obsession has not caught on but I can handle a bit of Fats Waller on stride piano. Thankfully I’ve so far succeeded in hooking my kids on SLF, the Clash, Joy Division etc so away trips are a very noisy experience with my 8 year old drumming away madly in the back and the 15 year old bellowing out the lyrics. My old man would have been less than impressed; he and his generation loathed punk with a passion!

My dad loved Jim Reeves. He spent his last 2 weeks in Pendleside Hospice in 2006 and during his last 2 days he had pneumonia and was unconscious but we had Jim Reeves best songs playing in his room on a constant loop. Jim Reeves had a wonderful voice but I still can’t listen to him now

Sinatra- my dad had all his stuff. What a singer- really appreciate his stuff now. And another shout for Glen Campbell— “ I am a linesman for Notts County “.

Interesting how he was able to do his on stage singing whilst suffering from pretty advanced dementia

Grew up living with my Grandma who idolised Frank Sinatra, when he died it was like losing a family member to her. My Grandad actually got jealous how much she loved him.

I appreciate his music nowadays, a legend of his era. Always think of my Granmda who’s no longer here when I hear him sing.

My dad loved Al Jolson. He recorded the Jolson Story soundtrack off the tv once by holding the microphone to the tv speaker. I forgot he was doing it and banged the back door closed after coming in from playing football. It didn’t go down well.
I played I’m Sitting on Top of the World at his funeral.

My Dad loved The Bachelors ,can remember him saying they’d still be going long after the Beatles,mind you I thought Ray Pointer was the greatest ever player,he always preferred John Connelly.

My mum had a Patsy Cline LP, which I couldn't get on with. Now I think she was the voice.

Neil Young from my dad.

Thankfully not.

But that is partly because they sent me to a music school, so I discovered some stuff a bit more advanced than you normally get to hear/work with at 9/10 than most. I don't think I've taken on anything directly from their musical tastes, but I'll settle for that.
