Re: Inn On The Wharf
As someone who knows this industry very well, it is definitely a brave decision to be investing in this in the current climate.
The function room could be valuable to them. Get that right and itgives them a bit of a base. But like others say, getting the volume in during the week is a challenge, and getting people out spending money on food and drink in pubs and restaurants is hard.
There's a perception that places are pricing themselves out (being greedy) and charging too much for food and drink. In the vast majority of cases they are definitely not being greedy. The reality is the fixed costs of these places are so high... the cost of quality ingredients is ridiculous. Food inflation is rampant, and typically your pub restaurant is paying more for their alcohol and food then you'd pay in a supermarket. Be particularly sympathetic to the independents, who don't have that buying power, and are definitely being squeezed.
Anyway.... understand that may not mean that much to people and is just the reality. And a lot of people are just struggling to get by.
But ultimately if you've got a local pub or restaurant that you like, and if you can afford to, get there as much as you can, support them, and recommend them. There will be a lot go over the next year or so.
Really hope the Inn on The Wharf gets the offer right and is well supported. I know the stress and effort that will be going into it.

Re: Inn On The Wharf
I was about to say something similar. Decent cask & craft and good food - will get the punters in on week days. If it's going to be another generic sport bar - rows of keg lager offering the same dross as elsewhere, then it will be a weekend pub.
I hope it's the former. It would be great to walk along the towpath for a good few miles in the Burnley direction if it entailed some decent ales to sample and well cooked food.
Whatever it is, good luck to them. At least the building is being used.
Re: Inn On The Wharf
‘Good quality real ale’ and ‘Sports pub’ just don’t go well together. Keeping a ‘quieter’ area of the pub free from the giant TV’s and Muzak might be a possible compromise.
Genuine good luck to the new management.

Well said. I get that times are hard, but too many people will spend their weekends sat at home watching Netflix, then moan when their local pub shuts. Use them or lose them.Indecisive wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 11:49 amAs someone who knows this industry very well, it is definitely a brave decision to be investing in this in the current climate.

Id be quite excited to walk in there to be faced with a couple of hand pulled beers...Bank Top Brewery, Farmyard Ales, Tiny Rebel....paradise .
Good luck to those involved. It was a lovely pub twenty years ago.

Could and should be a really good pub. I actually think the location is great. Great start of the night pub, close to the train station too. It was a real shame how it was run into the ground.

100% get that, but people are having to decide between Netflix or the local pub - the local ain't going to win

Re: Inn On The Wharf
We were at Finsley Gate Wharf on Saturday afternoon and it was great, except for some kid who ran round for about and hour making a piercing shrieking sound with no intervention from his parents / carers.
I get that some kids have issues, but f**k me it was annoying as hell

I go up regularly on a Friday pm with my parents and that is the first bad report I've heard of kids running wild. Says more about the parents going in than it does of the place.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2023 4:04 pmSounds like it's already attracting the best of Burnley.

Can you remember if they had any beers on draught, or is it mostly keg and lager? If they do some decent beers, I'll call in this week for a slurp and maybe a bite to eat.ŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2023 4:22 pmtbf its a nice gaff, they were very much the minority in terms of clientele

I’ll second this. There is very little appreciation of what’s going on in the industry. Food prices skyrocketing, you can’t pass it on or no one would come. Electricity is extortionate, business rates too, minimum wage jumps higher and higher every year. That’s before you’ve factored in anything like insurance, consumables, Epos, refuse, entertainment, uniforms, cleaning, maintenance and repairs - it goes on and on.
Feel like there’s a massive reset coming down the line because this can’t go on forever. Lots of places cutting down on staff to survive because the fixed costs are so big.
In my case, profits are going to reduce by 50% this year despite sales being up on 2022.
Wish them all the luck in the world!

I do wonder that we haven't seen more places being mothballed to either be sold or re-opened if the current climate changesJR1882 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2023 10:05 pmI’ll second this.
