Just came across this match programme from 1979.The match sponsor C Walker & Sons Limited were a back street scrap metal business that became Walkersteel.

Yes they used to alternate between Turf and down the Road as kids… picked favourites but followed both. My uncle used to go with them as kids. Fred was the Burnley fan.

Can assure you that in 1979 C Walkers were no back street scrap metal merchants!! Well established steel stockholders then !

I was at that match, though I didn't keep the programme (or not for more than a week or two) and definitely don't recall the advert - I trust Walker Steel's Marketing Dept weren't too disappointed by my failure.

Must’ve been postponed as according to the records the game wasn’t played until 21st Feb. 1-1 draw but we won the replay 3-0 5 days later at Roker Park.

And then played the next round of the FA Cup just two days later at Liverpool.

It was postponed around 13 times before it finally went ahead, one week arranged almost daily. We stuck with the original programme when it was eventually played.

I agree, i plastered the new offices on Paterson St, 1963, they had a fleet of transport and both owned MK 10 Jags. both well respected by all workers.

Mention of Fred Walker being a Claret but an old friend of mine used to play golf with him and said unlike his brother Jack he had no interest in football.

We did - I was in London on business and missed both of them. That win at Roker was also our last win at Sunderland until last season.

That Sunderland replay was a great night. I went by train & got there quite late, just managing to get in for kick off. There was quite a queue at the turnstiles and I always remember a guy getting in late & squeezing in next to me. When I told him Burnley were 2 up he refused to believe it until confirmed by the very upset Mackems round us. By the time Kindon scored our 3rd the terraces were virtually empty. Think I got back with the milk the next morning but it was worth it.

Yet another reason (not like there’s one needed) to stop singing that extremely distasteful (not to mention inaccurate) chant about Jack Walker.
