Does my soil pipe need rodding?

When I flush the toilet it fills up and doesn’t go down quickly, is the pipe blocked downstream and does it need rodding?

Sounds like a bung. If you can get hold of a plunger and get a decent suction try working that a few times. It happened to us and the plunger did the trick. Make sure it’s wide enough, some are just for sinks rather than toilets.

I had a similar problem. The plumber came along, got his long pipe out and had a right good rodding. I paid him, and he said he looked forward to coming again if I ever needed him.

Unless you live in a bungalow I’d say it’s toilet or internal drainpipe that needs clearing.

Have you got access to a manhole cover somewhere on your property. Not a pleasant task but if you lift the cover you will be able to see if the main sewer pipe is running freely. If it’s not running freely it will be backed up and a few feet deep in water plus who knows what else!

If it’s blocked there are emergency firms that will visit and check / flush out the blockage. We were charged about £60 and they solved problem in half an hour. I was expecting to pay more so see how you go on.

If the sewer pipe is not blocked it’s in the pipework between toilet pan and the sewer pipe so probably plunger and rubber gloves needed?

As above, use toilet brush. Keep flushing and vigorously push brush.

If there isn't a history of blocking it is likely a one off. The watermill slowly get round and through the blockage and soften it. Squirt neat washing up liquid into the pan to help this process. Don't flush the toilet just add water from a bucket. If you haven't a plunger get a mop and keep pushing and pulling out of the bend,this will create a movement that will release the blockage.

Just to add. If you have house insurance you may be covered under that policy, worth a call if you’re not sure and unable to clear it. Some Insurance companies allow a callout without any cost.

Best fix I was told and works a treat was cutting the bottom off a big pop bottle and using that as a plunger - stick a glove over your hand and keep plunging with the bottle and it’ll quickly clear it (obviously keep the top on the bottle to keep it sealed)

Open up your manhole covers and work back to the house.
We have 3 chez Hollands, and with a bit of common sense you can identify where the blockage is.
If successful, go to Screwfix and by a set of rods.
If this is a one-off it could be a blocked U bend on the bog. Manhole covers first!

NW water will sort the sewer blockage FOC these days if you have a blockage outside the house but between your hose and the main sewer
If you are not in a terraced house most properties will have one or more houses taking the effluent via one sewer pipe into the main sewer in the street
My guess is you have a sewer pipe blocked outside the house

If it's a blocked sewer you will likely have issues with other waste pipes, like the bath or sink (you could test this of course - run your sink tap for a while and see if the sink starts to back up), therefore let's start by assuming it's your toilet. The best tool is known as a 'snake':

I was having problems for a few years on and off. My toilet was some fifty years old. Eventually I decided to replace it. This is what the pipe leading out of the back of it looked like (those of a weak disposition, look away!):

That's mostly limescale. Nice! In fact you can see the effect of my using the snake on it and why it was getting blocked.

If this doesn't solve your problems then the next move depends on what sort of property you live in. Flats have 'stacks', which are pipes that take the waste water from your and the flats below and above you. If they get blocked your neighbours may also have issues. That's a job for professionals. Arrange that through your management company as it's a communal issue. If you live in a house the waste will lead to a manhole near your house. You might be able to deal with this. Come back on here and ask.

I'm sure there is guidance on all this on YouTube etc..

These work really well. If you use one make sure you block up any plug holes that connect to the same soil pipe so that stuff doesn’t get forced where you don’t want it

Empty as much water as you can from the pan. Pour a bottle of Domestos, or even better a litre of Sodium Hypochloride down, then add just enough water to get that over the U bend. Leave it to work as long as possible. Then flush away. Worst it’s cost you is a bottle of bleach.

We have a soak away system, being very rural. We had relatives stay, 4 females all using wet wipes. Nightmare to clean out after they had gone.we now have these signs in both bogs.

Retreat a safe distance and watch their eyes light up as they open the mystery gifts. A full bucket of water poured quickly usually unblocks mine. If the water flows over the toilet then you've got a problem with your drains and/or your diet.

I tried some foam unblocker that was recommended online and it didn’t work very well, some of it came up through the shower drain and the toilet is still very slow at going down
