Jay Rod absent /injured ?
After a lively pre season , suprised he wasn’t even on the bench on Fri . I know he’s fragile these days though not sure if he picked an injury up or is off ? A fit JR ( imo ) could do a job as he proved last season he’s versatile and still has that touch of class .

Posted on another thread was surprised he wasn’t on the bench. It also wouldn’t surprise me if he left by the end of the month along with the likes of Taylor and Cork.

My thoughts exactly, All great servants and Taylor still excellent for a top champ team . Bit suprised Cork and Jay didn’t wind down in the states .

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
I get the impression VK was trying out a few things against City. Jay Rod is a known entity, as is Corky, so the gaffer already knows the bar the incomers have to reach. Wouldn’t surprise me if they moved on, but neither would it if they reappeared as regulars.

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
Indeed he is; Jay Rod showed that he was off the pace and broke down through trying to achieve it the last time we were in the EPL and let's be honest he didn't fare a lot better in the Championship last year. Short of an injury crisis I don't see him getting a game other than in the League Cup and certainly nothing to learn from playing him.

Not sure he is no 2. Wouldn't read anything into that first game line up.

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
Don't at all think Friday was about VK trying a few options. THis was a massive game for VK-his debut as a manager in the EPL, and playing against the best in world -a club he earned so many honours at. On Friday he put out the best side available based on pre season, and from what e learned last season. What you are seeing now is the new hard manager. He needed the likes of Jay, Cork, Taylor, Brownhill lat season, but he knows this was their level in the Championship. I don't see Jay. Cork , Twine, Bastian and Taylor playing in the EPL, and Brownhill only when we have injuries.I would expect most of them being encouraged to move, in either loans or sales though the latter might be difficult

How exactly do you encourage players coming to the end of their careers to oblige by moving and taking a wage cut?warksclaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 10:47 pmDon't at all think Friday was about VK trying a few options. Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
He didn't though. For a start he went with a different formation, 3 centre halves and more orthodox wing backs than the full backs we used last season. It was clearly more about giving some new faces some PL minutes in a free hit, with the best part of 2 weeks to work on things til our next game.warksclaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 10:47 pmOn Friday he put out the best side available based on pre season, and from what e learned last season.
We'll see a few different things throughout the season, players will be needed for different things at different times. Lots of options now.

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
Its a self created problem caused by over extending contracts of players coming to the end of their careers. Offering both Jay and Cork two year extensions shortly after relegation from the PL was poor business. Neither were performing in that last Premier year. Its now left down to VK to resolve. I guess the club needs to sit down with them, be honest about very limited playing time and promote their availability with a view to going on loan and the club part paying their wages to cut their losses. You never know both might want to go and finish their careers in the States. Sometimes a business , or in this case a club can be (or at least appear to be) too ruthless.

Practically a registered charity, love Jay but the wages we have paid him have been obscene in comparison with the return we have had.

Wout - 2 goals and 3 assists in 20 appearances for us
Rodriguez - 3 goals and 4 assists in his last 60 PL appearances
One is awful, the other can do a good job for us. Wake up and smell the coffee

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
Muric is by far the number 1 keeper at the club and would be at a fair few PL teams.

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
I do wonder if Jay sees how much Westy and Arfield are enjoying their time in the USA and fancies it himself. I think we will keep hold of Jack tbh, there are better candidates to leave before him and IF we bring in another striker then Jay will leave on a free because there is no way he gets game time.
Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
Who the heck is going to take a Jayrod, Cork or Taylor on a free? …for 40k per week. NObody. Maybe for 20k per week??
Mls, Championship, nobody will take these guys (respectively) for 40k per week

Westy and Arfield are over here, they don't get anything close to 40k per week, it looks like Westy is on about 12K per week

Many said the same about J-Rod, Cork, Mee and Taylor before the Championship season last year and were proved wrong.

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
Sadly thats true. I think from Jan to the end of last season Jay played a total of around 100 minutes(might be a bit more), but took £40k a week, and people on here feeling sad and sorry for him.Having watched much of the PL action this weekend its been a very stark reminder of who we are competing against, with the possible exception of Luton and Sheff Utd. VK has I believe realised there are 5 or 6 of last years squad where the PL is a step too far and is prepared to make some tough decisions, which started with the selection of Trafford on Friday and key omissions from the squad and bench

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
We have been far to sentimental in the past to our detriment, Dyche was to sentimental both with contracts and loyalty ultimately to his detriment we have to be realistic and decisive,it isn't brutal it's top end football.
Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
Saw something on Twitter before kick off (which I am trying to find again) that JayRod, Bastien, Twine and Taylor were held up by the roadworks/traffic and didn't arrive at the Turf until around19:10, which was after the teams were announced

Twine arrived around 7:15 - he was the passenger in a car. Those involved on the night travel in together by coach.
Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
Personally still haven't seen anything to suggest Trafford deserved to start ahead of Muric, nothing he did Friday Muric couldn't do.warksclaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 14, 2023 8:27 amSadly thats true. Muric streets ahead of him currently for me but no doubting Trafford's potential

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
Exactly that and given Jay-Rods injury record over the last few years, I doubt that we'd get even a Championship club to 'pay us a fee'. Jay's still got a year left on what's likely to a well paid Contract, so he'll either sit it out, or at best move on a free with Burnley subsidising his wages.AmbleClaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 11:00 pmReally don't want to agree with this in my heart, but my head says exactly right. Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
He played a midfielder that had only signed for the club 48 hours previous, how is that based on pre season?warksclaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 10:47 pmDon't at all think Friday was about VK trying a few options. My take on Friday is that it was used as a preseason extension, an opportunity to gauge the new players against the benchmark. Plenty of work to do but very promising are my thoughts of their performances.
The likes of JRod, Cork and Taylor are required to step in when required, but most importantly, provide continuity of the team ethic and spirit that VK pointed to as being a huge positive about the SD legacy.
At best, there maybe one of those you mentioned could move on this summer, but I don't expect all of them to leave. All of course IMO.

Re: Jay Rod absent /injured ?
The key difference with Ash the Bash was that his contract had expired, so he didn't have the 'stay at Burnley and pick-up £40k/week' option amongst his choices.
Whilst I'm all for 'loyalty' I do feel that too many confuse that word with Jay-Rod's 'One of Us' badge. I'm fairly confident that Jay-Rod won't have played many (if any) more games for the club than Jack Cork, or indeed Charlie Taylor and it'll certainly be less than Asley Barnes did. I'd no problem with Jay-Rod leaving for Southampton - he'd a career to build - but I recall that he had the opportunity to return to the Turf directly from there in 2017 and at least once from WBA in 2018, before eventually doing so in 2019.
Jay-Rod didn't choose to 'come home', until there were no better offers elsewhere. Again, I've no problem with that, the chap chose to maximise his earnings potential, just like the rest of us; but those choices don't earn him any more 'loyalty' that a lot of other players. As for the 'one of us', I think we more than made good on that when we agreed to a two-year deal last summer.

I re-watched last seasons goals in my lunch break and forgot how many Jay scored before his injury. If he had stayed fit (and I know that defeats my point), he would have been on for a very good haul !

Yes but a club actually wanted Ben, and prepared to give him a two year contract and pay him a good package, probably more than we were paying him.. There is no PL side that would take Jay or Jack, and on £40k a week unlikely a Championship club would. File under Dale Stephens/Matt Lowton
