So, was it a penalty?
Not long after city’s goal I was convinced in real time that Amdouni (I think it was) was brought down but there didn’t even appear to be a VAR check.
I have not seen a replay so if anyone has, was it a penalty?

Re: So, was it a penalty?
At the time in the ground I thought there was a 'maybe' for a potential foul on Al-Dakhil, if that's the same one you're thinking of? It looked like a push.
Having seen it back on Twitter he did get two hands on him but went down a bit soft, to say the least. I have seen them given though (usually for Arsenal....against us).

Re: So, was it a penalty?
The Amdouni one gets given as a foul anywhere else on the pitch.

I thought not but after seeing some of the ones awarded since I think it might have been.
Re: So, was it a penalty?
Thought it was a pen at the time, seen it a few times since and still think it's a pen. Soft, sure but soft penalties get given every week.

Some games yes, other games no
All depends on the ref/var quite simply.
First game of the season, against City, was never going to happen.

Seen on ref watch on sky today that dermot gallagher said if the ref had given the pen then it would definitely not been overturned so not sure if it got checked or not but i thought it was a pen!

Re: So, was it a penalty?
And i have seen an absolute stone waller for us against Arsenal not given. Was it Kevin Long who was clearly fouled in the box at the Emirates a few seasons back and not given. Same game possibly where Vydra was given offside when he was about 2 yards behind the Arsenal defender?jedi_master wrote: ↑Mon Aug 14, 2023 12:19 pmAt the time in the ground I thought there was a 'maybe' for a potential foul on Al-Dakhil, if that's the same one you're thinking of? Clear pen - It was definitely checked but was never going to be given, despite the new directives

Re: So, was it a penalty?
I thought that it was a penalty in real time and even more when I have seen on TV. I find it hard to understand why it wasn't even reviewed by VAR. If I was cynical I would say something along the lines of 'if it was on Harland it would be given'.

Haven't seen it close up but from my position on the centre line, at the rear of Longside Upper, I thought it was leg first then ball, so pen.
Re: So, was it a penalty?
In real time it looked clear pen. The defender clearly pulled Amdouni back by the arm. Amdouni tried to stay on his feet. Defender let go. Amdouni went down theatrically. Certainly a pen at the other end. Last season we were a big fish in a small pond Now it is the reverse

It was no softer than the one Brighton got against Luton on Saturday.

The VAR review failed the club badge check. How many times will we be saying that this year?

Defo a penalty for me, thought so at the time and when seeing it again on Sky. Carragher said something like he didn't hold on to him for long enough!
Would have been given for them
Would have been given for them
Re: So, was it a penalty?
I thought it looked dodgy, and if the ref had given it VAR wouldn't have overturned it. But, there probably wasn't enough for VAR to overturn the ref.

Certainly wouldn’t have been surprised to see it given in the other box.

It grates that this incident was only superficially "checked".

Re: So, was it a penalty?
Watched the whole game back this morning and for me it’s a definite foul and should have been a penalty. Seen so many like that given in the past.
Re: So, was it a penalty?
I thought our best penalty claim was Al Dakhil and the push on him by Silva.
I note City did not make any real appeals for a penalty although of course Grealish didn't play and Sane and Sterling have moved on! I think they did have one reasonable claim - can't remember it now.

Amdouni, possibly. Certainly wouldn't get overturned
Al-Dakhil, definitely. Blatant push
I didn't miss VAR last season. I'm already hating it this season

Re: So, was it a penalty?
I think this is the perfect example of where the ref should be given a chance to have a second look. The more I see it, the more I think its a penalty. I'd happily accept a ref having a look and sticking with his original decision. I'd understand why. But I can see a very similar incident happening this season, and VAR giving a pen
Re: So, was it a penalty?
Why do people keep saying “wasn’t checked by VAR?”Cirrus_Minor wrote: ↑Mon Aug 14, 2023 1:46 pmI thought that it was a penalty in real time and even more when I have seen on TV. Have you watched the behind the scenes of the VAR room? They watch the game and double check EVERYTHING. They will then instruct the referee the view the monitor if they believe the ref has made a mistake.
They obviously thought the referee got the decision correct or there wasn’t enough for them to overrule the refs onfield decision
EVERYTHING IS CHECKED BY VAR

Re: So, was it a penalty?
If that one that Brentford got yesterday was a penalty by VAR then ours certainly was. I don’t like VAR and I cannot understand the inconsistency and interpretation by the seemingly inept VAR officials.
Re: So, was it a penalty?
On the subject of penalties, do we know who will be our penalty taker this season, now Barnes has moved on? Assuming we are awarded any, that is
Re: So, was it a penalty?
Just seen the Man U goalkeeper do a Tim Kruul and wipe one of the Wolves players out and no penalty given, what a joke?

Re: So, was it a penalty?
There is no point in VAR when it's run by the same people off the pitch as on it
It doesn't eliminate human error, it just means they can still get it wrong twice
We can all point at the times it has corrected decisions. But I'm struggling to see how that outweighs the controversy it brings

Go and watch how the VAR room works

You mean like how they looked at the Wolves penalty decision in a fair and un biased way?

Re: So, was it a penalty?
In this day & age VAR needs scrapping & it's time to just trust the officials the ref & linesmen & if they are incompetent to do their job properly they need replacing. I'm a great believer in if you get a dodgy decision it'll come back at some point & the other team will get a dodgy decision, over the course of the season it should all roughly even itself out. Time after time VAR has proved itself to be flawed or the people checking it have & it's safe to say something has been tried & it's not worked.

Re: So, was it a penalty?
There's no proof either way because you'll never get opposing teams agreeing on decisions which would go against them. But I don't believe by the law of averages 1 team would constantly be on the wrong end of the decisions.
Re: So, was it a penalty?
Maybe one day VAR will be run by AI - then who will we complain about.
We allow a system like Hawk-eye to decide things for us without argument.

It does in my mind if you have 10 flips of a coin you should (in theory) land on tails 5 times & heads 5 times based on 2 outcomes with a 50/50 chance.
