I'm still clinging on and persevering with the good old original green Fairy stuff but can't help noticing the different 'flavours' on offer and even the much cheaper alternative brands, much cheaper some.

The cheap stuff is a false economy- Fairy is the best and you only need a tiny drop with decent water pressure

Recover is better. Fairy is okay as a substitute for plasticiser when mixing sand and cement.

Was watching "Homes under the hammer" and Tommy Walsh was on about crumbling mortar in pointing because people use washing up liquid as a plastiser ... I've always used it and 'touch wood' it seems OK

How expensive is a decent washing powder though? You could buy a small farm in Tanzania for one of bigger boxes.

Washing powder and more especially dishwasher soap are products that the supermarkets see as not being especially price-sensitive, so aim to make a good profit on; check with your local corner shop, as even they can compete with the big players on these lines.
As for which brand to choose, I can't advise... The wife's not in to ask.

Ecover is much better environmentally but it simply doesn't clean stuff well. Original fairy seems to be the best for actually cleaning stuff. We use Ecover on Scout camp - 11 days, 60-70 people in a field and we must get through gallons of Ecover because you need so much of it. As we are draining straight to the ground we use it but give me fairy any day of the week if you are using the grey water system.

We care about the environment so it's Ecover for us. I can't recall a problem with getting crockery clean by hand. Don't have a dishwasher.

We use Lidl's finest cleans the dishes exactly the same as Fairy liquid and the rest,I can't believe we have Washing up liquid snobs on here

I find it helps to read the label

... but as the wife does all that I leave it to her suprior knowledge in all things domestic etc ...

Detergent is a cheap and simple thing to create as far as my understanding goes. The more expensive brands are more expensive because they pay so much to advertise and put more money into ensuring their product foams nicely, creating the illusion that it is doing more than it actually is.

Yeah! but then you've got to learn how to stack it and someone is needed to unload it when it's done. Lot's of bending down involved too.

Not to mention filling it with salt and vinegar or some other liquid. That's a hands and knees job. Then the pouch. All work.

I am a tight arsed git at the best of times, but if there is one thing I will not compromise on and happily pay more for, it is washing up liquid - Fairy Original every time for me.

I few years ago I visited a well known detergent bottle manufacturer & filler. You'd be surprised at the number of 'brands" that came out of the same chemical vats. The only real difference was bottle shape/ labels.

Got to be Fairy everytime. Full bodied and the apple flavour tastes far better than the lemon but have have a sneaky liking for a cheeky pomegranate.

I don’t think Fairy is as good as it once was, we used to use Morning Fresh but that doesn’t seem as good, so now it’s a supermarket’s own brand for sensitive skin…..I really think that there cant be that many ways to make liquid soap….

We use Morrisons Own Brand now ... Because my Mrs has problems with Fairy Liquid and it drying her skin, yet Morrisons doesn't so no brainer ... mind you we do most of our main washing using a Dishwasher (Solar panels mean no cost energy wise during the day)
