Team v Spurs

Post by RVclaret » Thu Aug 31, 2023 9:12 am

The new Spurs are playing similar-ish to City, therefore I wouldn’t mind seeing us play the same system as we did v City, I thought we did well and Spurs aren’t City. Worth seeing how Muric’s ball playing gets on. I would like Brownhill in there and Berge can play that forward right role quite well.

———————————Muric
————Al-Dakhil—O’Shea—Delcroix
Roberts—-Brownhill—Cullen———Larsen
————Berge—————————Foster
—————————Amdouni

3-4-3 / 5-2-3 hybrid

Fine with Berge there so long as JB is in to do the water carrying.

I'd like to think Roberts is thinking more RB than central midfield. We can't afford another Villa performance.

Quite like that and anything is better than the 4114 we started with against Villa
We started the 2nd half as your formation for this are stated and we’re solider and more attacking at the same time
For me it’s slightly too defensive BUT starting like that and getting a foothold in the game, which we didn’t first half against Villa, and then bringing on the likes of Benson etc is probably wise

Got to be Muric, though I feel it won't be.

This is a strong team but I just can’t see it playing the way VK wants to play
I’m almost certain there will be 2 wingers hogging the touchline and very advanced and Foster and Amdouni
I don’t know how you have a strong enough midfield and defence with that style of forward play

I think the majority see this, not necessarily the personnel,
as the required defensive platform, for Spurs,
……….. ……..Muric…………………..
Roberts O’Shea Aldakeel Taylor
……. Brownhill… Cullen……………
………………… Berge……………………

The linking up to the forwards are Roberts and Taylor overlapping and Brownhill pushing up alongside Berge, so this solid SEVEN can link up with the attacking FOUR?

I’m adamant that VK is going to play Foster & Amdouni in a rotating 9 & 10 role and play 2 wingers as advanced as the two forwards and hugging the touchline and not dropping back to defend

Now that’s the issue 7 plus 4 makes 11 outfield players

……….. ……..Muric…………………..
Roberts O’Shea Aldakeel Taylor
……. Brownhill… Cullen……………
………………… Berge……………………

I’ve been trying to mould the two and I’ve failed
I always end up with obvious weakness’s or 11 outfield players

Does Berge drop out and Foster play his role, so you’ve a front 3 but Foster is tied down with defensive duties

Does Brownhill drop out but the 2 advanced wide men then have to defend also, or we get overrun like in the 4114 against Villa, where Roberts was stepping in to help Cullen it seemed, but Villa already had 4 or 5 on 4 anyway so was big holes appearing, we were basically uneven and stretched

A back 3 maybe

……….. ……..Muric…………………..
….Roberts O’Shea Aldakeel
……. Brownhill… Cullen……………
………………… Berge……………………

Still vulnerable to the flanks like against Villa
And they have Kulesheski? & Son

Can’t be Benson as I wide man as they’d have to defend
352 defensively
3124 on the attack?

So I’m going radical
………... Muric…………..
……O’Shea… AlDakeel.
JBG ..…Cullen ….Larsen
Koleosho Berge Oderbert
….. Foster. Amdouni

Luckily VK’s cb picking the team
Although I still prefer my 2332 to the Villa 4114
Second half 532 against Villa is likely how we should go

How would you sort a team if we played that out & out front 4 again?

Unless we have incoming we really don't have much choice re centre backs and VK may almost be wishing he had McNally available all of a sudden.
After that Roberts and Taylor at full backs is surely a given and Brownhill likewise after being left out for the last two league matches and our midfield looking pretty ropey! The rest is simply throwing up the names and seeing who falls face up.

-------------------Trafford
Roberts----O’Shea----Al Dakhil----Taylor
----Brownhill----Cullen----Berge
JBG----------------------------------JBL
-------------------Foster

Willing to continue with Trafford for now.
Taylor has to play. Might not be exactly what VK wants at LB but the best option we have by far right now.
3 man midfield with Cullen as the pivot, Brownhill & Berge box to box driving forward would be a decent and hard working midfield.
Thought both wide men tonight looked excellent. JBG, like much of last season was an integral in much of the build up play to our best chances tonight. Adds experience also. Koleosho has looked very exciting so far, but he's very young and maybe a better option to bring on from the bench for now. Same with Benson, who arguably had his best moments last season from the bench.
Glad Amdouni got his goal, took it very well, but chose Foster to start vs spurs after his performances in the two league games.

Muric
Roberts O'Shea Al-Dakhil Taylor
Brownhill Cullen Berge
JBG Foster Amdouni
I've gone for balance and a blend of youth and experience against what will be an organised, dangerous Spurs team.

Very interesting how posters’ views have come into alignment vs the ‘team for villa’ thread - seeing a lot more teams of similar structure and personnel.

I’d prefer that we play our favoured shape rather than tweak depending on the opposition, in all honesty (not to mention Vitinho out with a knock for lwb)

Like many games in the PL well football it’s probably going to be won and lost in midfield - Spurs have two very good athletes in Bissouma and Sarr that can play a bit as well, and a very creative James Maddison dictating their play.

Udogie worth a mention as being another highly athletic, dangerous player from left wing back - we cannot afford to leave gaping holes in behind like we did for Digne/Cash.

That being said, it’s a 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 for me:

——————-—-Muric
Roberts-O’Shea-AlDak-Taylor
——————-—Cullen
————-Berge———Brownhill
Koleosho ——Zeki———-Foster

That’s the front three that started against Citeh! Taylor can get wide and high and Brownhill can pull wide there as well

Muric
Roberts, AD, OS, Taylor,
JBG, Brownhill, Cullen, Kol,
Foster, Amdouni.

This more we see of each player, the more difficult this is to do.

Tricky this but whilst my personal preference would be Muric, I think Trafford needs backing for now. Taylor is the best available left back by some reason so I'd play him, we need the midfield 3 and then that leaves 3 forward positions. The unlucky one for me is Amdouni - but I want JBG to start for set plays and defensive diligence, and I want the pace on the counter of Foster and Koleosho, so Amdouni is the odd one out.

A reason not to panic if things don't go our way tomorrow...
  • Burnley are aiming to avoid losing their opening three matches of a top-flight season for only the fourth time after the 1920-21, 1927-28, and 2020-21 campaigns. None of those ended in relegation and they went on to be crowned champions in 1920-21.
