Maatsen video on social media

The video going round of Maatsen watching sky sports news as they say Chelsea have agreed a fee with us and saying ‘up the blues I’m still here’ poor from Maatsen, a young lad who’s had his head turned and advised to stay where he is. He’s forgetting the season Burnley gave him last season and showed a lack of respect.

Im 100% certain Maatsen won’t start a game between now and Jan and will be lucky to make the bench most weeks.

Here’s the video - https://x.com/stokeyyg2/status/16977723 ... rNr6Z5x6nA

To be fair to him, he may not have realised the person filming the call was going to put it on social media. In any event he’s just reacting to a story that he’s leaving Chelsea by saying he isn’t in what looks like a private phone call.

No big deal.

A good footballer but not a good defender for me. I won’t miss him.

It’s front camera you clearly know your being filmed, if he thinks it’s a private call then he needs new mates, just poor form imo no need for it, especially when Chelsea wanted to let him go

The fee reported was insane for a left back that struggles to defend.Glad it didn’t happen.

It might be for the benefit of Chelsea fans, rather than the fans of a club he previously played for.

His agent and or Maatsen played a blinder, he stayed at Chelsea and got a nice big fat contract extension and big pay rise well done to him, if he's more bothered about money and the cudos of sitting on the Chelsea bench then he's not the player for us, I've said it a few times I don't rate him has a defender even playing in the role of a moden wing back, to small to weak and that's why Chelsea don't play him in defence

Half the players we have signed have left their clubs to get a pay rise here knowing full well they will be on the bench every week.

Anyhow, what do you expect him to say? For all we know, he might have been hankering behind the scenes to come back, and this is his way to ingratiate himself back into the fold with those who he has to near enough live and work live with for the foreseeable future.

Thing is, if we are going to get all precious about this - then football fandom really has jumped the shark. Fair enough, if he was laughing his head off while saying 'f*ck the Clarets'. I'm surprised there's even a thread about this, on a largely middle-aged fans forum.

If this is the same Ian Maatsen as the one that helped us win the league last year and spent last Christmas delivering presents to families in Burnley that were struggling to pay for Christmas then I'll not get too offended.

Talented lad who may have a big future if he makes the right choices. Only time will tell whether he has made the right call this time.

He made his choice. Good luck to him. He did well for us last year, but he wasn't irreplaceable and the fact we didn't chase any other LBs makes me believe VK already had a plan B, tactically.

Not sure there's much in that video.
He was a very good player for us last season but I would worry about him defensively at this level in a team that isn't going to dominate posession in the same way as last year. If the fee was accurate I'm actually quite relieved we haven't signed him and a little staggered how that sort of valuation could be justified. Particularly as players like Hudson Odoi went for a reported 8m and have arguably had much more success at Chelsea and only 1 year age difference.

We’ve signed plenty of very talented youngsters who want to showcase their talent in the PL, rather than sit in a big clubs reserves, with a view to a bigger move if they prove their talent.

If Maatsen doesn’t want to be part of that project it’s no skin off my nose.

I’ll take the Bellinghams of the world all day long over the Rodwells.

Fair play to him if he wants to stay at Chelsea and fight for a place. Chilwell and Cucurella are hardly Carlos and Maldini. Maatsen may well break his way into that team.

He's a talented young player in a squad full of youngsters. He probably feels this season is his big chance to break into the Chelsea team. It's not the Chelsea of old, full of experienced megastars etc. There are places up for grabs.

Good luck to him. He was excellent when on loan with us and he deserves a chance to make it at his parent club.

He's a contracted player, not a free agent, so how do we know it was his choice to stay? Sounds like a load of Mystic Meggery.

The video doesn't bother me. If he wants to stay at Chelsea to try and get into the side, then fair play to him. Not many players get the opportunity to play for such a top club, it might be his last chance to prove himself at that level.

I was excited/happy when we'd agreed a fee but in reality that's too much for a left back who is questionable defensively. He was brilliant for us last year and I think he's premier league quality but we're not exactly flush with cash and I don't think we can spend that sort of money after we've already pushed the boat out this window. I just hope our already proven premier league left back gets the opportunity.

He probably turned the move down straight away and was sick of the media repeating the story all day as it might still happen.

It's tedious watching them do it, nevermind the story being about you.

Isn’t the issue on why we feel like we do the fact we didn’t have alternatives. To what extent was this due to Maatsen keeping both options open and misleading us. I can’t believe we weren’t confident of him signing if we were prepared to eventually pay whatever Chelsea demanded.

I don't mind that at all.

He wouldn't be weakened financially by staying there. He might not even lose any transfer value.

For his development, I wouldn't have thought getting a splinter in his backside is the best for him.

For us, I would have been very happy to get him. I think he is a very talented player with lots of potential. Unfortunately, I think the reported fee was wither a lie or plain ridiculous. We could do a lot more with that money for a player who is very dominant on his left foot, poor defensively and a weak link for set-pieces. In an alarming number of cases, players of his stature are an injury waiting to happen. All in all, I am not disappointed he's not coming.

With unknown add-ons bringing the fee to a total way beyond anything we were likely to agree to pay and with Maatsen turning the deal down, I can't help thinking this deal was set up by Chelsea more to help alleviate their FFP problems than anything else. It's possible Maatsen decided he didn't want to be a pawn in their financial game and if that is the case, then good for him.

The move just didn't appeal to him he'd already tried something once so it's not as if he didn't know what he was letting himself in for, he isn't the first & won't be the last Chelsea player that wants to stay put & fight for the jersey, good luck to him in his future choices he doesn't owe us anything shouldn't be any bitterness.

The video is a bit childish but no great crime. If anything it’s more a dig at SSN thinking they know what’s going on when it isn’t the case.

Would’ve loved him to sign for us, but equally happy we didn’t pay over £30m for him. At that price, for a club at our level you’d be hoping for an absolute game changer of a player. Whilst Maatsen would plug the gap on the left side, I don’t see him being a game changer for us.

This is the one thing Chelsea fans are suddenly coming to realise. They were creaming themselves last night, but the reality is they might lose out on around 30 million quid if he runs his contract down. Some of them are now starting to realise this :)

Comes across as confident and I fully expect him to displace Chilwell (if he can stay fit) before much longer. Anyhow we've got a good LB who I firmly believe can play in this system and give us the balance we need.

I think the academy players are getting wise to how the big clubs are making money out of them and calling their bluff by running down their contracts, having established what the market will pay for them.

In this case Maatsen can now pocket a large part of the fee rather than Chelsea.

I think Chelsea failed to get a few out of the door, perhaps they all have the same agent?
