Was there that day at was stood right in line with Caspers shot, terrific goal ......what a player!..... he could shoot fom just about anywhere always power behind the shot. Pity that this was probably the pinnacle of his career as sometime later in the season we went to Elland road.

Frank was surely on the verge of an England call. His performances at Spurs and Wolves were something else but this was the complete team performance. What a hell of a side we had.

Long time ago but I recall we just got better and better as the game progressed. When you look at Wolves 'front five' and they were hardly in the game it highlights just what a complete performance it was. As you say, Frank Casper was at the very top of his form, orchestrating from midfield allied to deadly finishing further forward. What else did he have to do to earn some international recognition? All this and two teenagers in Ray Hankin and Billy joining the first team ranks. Next up was to turn out a poignant occasion for me but I'll leave the rest to your excellent reports.

Interesting that Ray Tinkler was the referee. He was one of the linesmen at Wembley 1962 but I can't remember if he was the one who flagged Jimmy Robson for offside or the other one who flagged for a foul on Adam Blacklaw just before the Spurs penalty but was ignored.

I might be wrong but was it Tinkler who allowed that West Brom goal at Leeds that prompted Don Revie to march onto the pitch?
If so, rate the ref, 25, 25, 25, 25.

One of those games when you just stood there open mouthed at just how good we were.

Glad you brought this up Tony. I put something on last night about it being one of the best performances I ever saw from a Burnley side. Apart from having to kick off three times they hardly had a touch of the ball. We just completely dominated the game.

Derek Dougan looks like he’s in his 50’s in the photo on the front of the programme but that also applies to lots of footballers from that era when you see games from The Big Match revisited

Just a few years before my time but always a good read. Interesting to look at the league tables and the reminder of 2 points for a win.
Must say I personally much prefer that they made the change to 3 points for a win. That said our nearest and dearest would never have actually succeeded in buying the premier league if they had only kept the 2 points system for a further 14 years. It would be interesting to see how many other teams have only won the league by default being that they would have finished 2nd on the 2 points system or vice versa on the 3 points system.

And also a reminder of goal average being used rather than goal difference. That changed in 1976 and it's been goal difference since apart from a short lived change to goals scored.

Pleased to see someone else watches The Big Match Revisited.
Dougan was 36 at the time of this game.

Remember it well, in those days you could sit with a pint in your hand and watch. When the first went in our pints went all over.
Superb performance we were at Spurs on the Wednesday another great night

I remember Alan Stevenson saving one with his foot early on and that was it as far as Wolves were concerned.
Great start to the season with the same team (except for Noble) that won promotion.

I was on that train but I'd forgotten that. I seem to remember we arrived in Wolverhampton late and had to run to the ground.

Wasn't there a dodgy subway/tunnel under a road on the way from the station to the ground? Dodgy in the sense that our Wolverhampton 'friends' might be there to greet us.
