Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Post by Hipper » Fri Sep 22, 2023 6:37 pm

Who read it back in the day, or since then?

I didn't know there was a film and have just watched that:

The filming of the gulls is terrific, and there’s some pretty good radio controlled airplane stuff that makes it look like JLS is doing loop de loops. I didn’t like the music (Neil Diamond) and the philosophising became irritating (although that is really what it’s about) but it was pretty enjoyable.

I have read it many times. Only takes a day.
Brilliant read.
Very thought provoking. One of my favourite books.

First heard this album whilst doing Art studies/training for Teacher's Certificate at Edge Hill Teacher Training College, in Ormskirk , back in the 1970's.
The music played in the background was very conducive to developing my artistic skills . Consequently bought the album by Neil Diamond which had the book included inside with very evocative pictures. I thought the orchestration was very impressive and fitted the words so well.

I have spent a fair bit of time with Richard Bach, an interesting chap. He told me he doesn't feel 'he' wrote Jonathan Livingston Seagull but was possessed by another spirit and channeled it into a writing that was basically done in one sitting.

I have the Neil Diamond Album on vinyl , currently need a new turntable before I can play it again but always found it a great listen if I needed a quiet moment to calm everything down.

Yes I read it For me it is a metaphor about life, developing the skills and character to overcome the challenges that life will confront you with.
