Re: HST2
The fact that there is only 1 direct train an hour to either Leeds or Manchester from Burnley indicates how little the government cares about the regional economies . High Wycombe is about the same distance from London as Burnley is to Manchester and virtually identical population and it has 4 trains an hour 5 in the peak to the city.

People who lose a few minutes of their time are up in arms and the Daily Mail has a field day making stuff up about the disruption costing lives.
Northerners, as they always seem to do, will believe and accept all the crap that is heading their way.

Re: HST2
Indeed. One of the most bizarre things about this is that the absolutely huge amount of construction work at Streethay, just south of Burton on Trent near here, is going to be a permanent reminder of this government's idiocy.
Slap bang in the middle of Fabric*nt's constituency which is nice.
There's been a 40 mph limit on the A38 for what seems like years now, causing huge problems daily.
I wonder if that will ever be abolished.
I guess it's the same for many, many sites along the route from Brum.
Grotesque.

This will be where the new high speed line from London ties in with the existing west coast line up to the north. This will be used. Its the not yet started work north of Lichfield which will never happen.evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Thu Oct 05, 2023 5:06 pmIndeed. "23.So we will complete Phase 1 of HS2 between London and the West Midlands as planned. There will be two branches: one to central Birmingham; and one to Handsacre, near Lichfield, meaning passengers will be able to travel on HS2 trains through to Manchester, Liverpool and Scotland, joining the West Coast Main Line for the rest of their journeys."

Re: HST2
Rishi Sunak, knowing he will never be elected PM, has clocked on that there's loads of land been bought for HS2 that the government can flog at discounted rates to people who just so happen to be cronies of the Tories.
It's one hell of a shame that there's no effective opposition and we're just going to elect a government that believes all the same things but has a better vibe, but that's what the people of this country want and deserve.

Re: HST2
Those in rural areas who live near the route, but weren't going to be touched by HS2, must have thought they had dodged a bullet when the plans were submitted. If I was them, I would be more than a little concerned by its cancellation. The land already has planning permission, and this will be easy to change. They'll end up being surrounded by new-build. The only fast-tracking they are going to see will be the planning permission.daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 1:00 pmRishi Sunak, knowing he will never be elected PM, has clocked on that there's loads of land been bought for HS2 that the government can flog at discounted rates to people who just so happen to be cronies of the Tories.

And now the government is going to sell off the land it doesn’t need ASAP to make it unviable for a future labour government to resurrect it , I don’t agree HS2 is a good use of money but this just smacks of childish dog in a manger behaviour typical of so many politicians

All depressingly predictable, there were threads on here years ago predicting this would happen.
Loads of promises of investments, Northern Power House ( more like steam house ), HS2, new commuter infrastructure across the North...etc etc.
All that just to get into government and line the Tory coffers, with backhanders, backstabbings, corruption, lies, lies and more lies.
We were all conned.
The south is treated completely different..as if it was the only thing that matters...need a Northern PM...wish Andy Burnham and Lisa Nandy would throw their hat in the Labour ring.

I haven't read all this thread but I think had HS2 been started in the north it would have been completed. In fact I read that HS1 standard would have been sufficient. HS1 is, of course, a line in the South East.

And rightly so. The sale of that house has probably been going on for years and blighted someone’s life all that time. They shouldn’t back out of commitments just because prime ministers can’t make up their minds.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 3:15 pmGovernment bought £1.5m house on HS2 line less than 24 hours before Rishi Sunak cancelled it.

Re: HST2
Certainly for Whitehall. London centricity is relatively new. Until the late 70’s London was one of the cheapest places in Britain to live… because it was a dump. Privatisation of public services… trains, gas, electric, water etc… that we were told would mean state of the art tech from the private sector in reality was a cash grab to build London into what it is, at the cost of the country… but particularly the North… That had made the country wealthy again, after the Government had more or less bankrupted the country paying the upper class slave owners to release slaves (but nothing for those that had been put in bondage) prior to the Industrial Revolution. That is the ruling class… that we are supposed to look up to and admire btw.SydneyClaret wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 10:54 pmThe North has always been an inconvenience for London. Re: HST2
Did anyone see the backtracking the day after Sunak announced a load of projects when he scrapped HS2? Half of the projects were made up on the hoof and didn't exist. The next day, the Department for Transport basically admitted this after being dragged over the coals by MPs and journalists. It was blatantly obvious from the start that we (in the north) had been conned yet again.
It's a bit like Chelsea v Grimsby Town - every sodding week. Or, to put it another way, South East PLC v Northern Wastelands. Levelling Up? Here are some crumbs from our table - now p1ss off.
