If he looked League One he should have starred versus Salford

That would be the favourite, unfortunately the combination of the club happy to see things remain the way there are & his unwillingness to leave understandably so leaves him remaining until the contract runs out. He's entitled to see his contract out even though from a footballing point of view it doesn't make much sense in terms of him not playing often & having minimal impact when he does, he's a free passenger on a paid ticket for the short stay that's left.

Well you can only beat what's in front of you and Salford barely put anything in front of us tonight to the extent we didn't have to get out of neutral, never mind 1st gear. That said, this was a world away from making wholesale changes and throwing ourselves out of the cup asap that we became accustomed to in recent times. All those who came in wanted to prove a point and we still looked like a cohesive team.

Difficult to mark as this was hardly a contest but you still have to do the work and dominate even when there's such a mismatch.

Muric - 6 nothing to do, reckon 99% of his touches were outside the area

Vitinho - 7 fine

O'Shea - 7 largely comfortable

Cork - 7 slotted in nicely at centre half

Delcroix - 7 worked well with Odobert, got forward a lot

Berge - 9 ran the game

Zaroury - 8 revelled in a free role, involved almost over the pitch

Bruun-Larsen - 8 thought he was excellent tonight and finished off a lovely move for his goal. He talks a lot which is good to see.

Benson - 5 didn't have time to do a lot before he got injured.

Odobert - 7 really like the look of this lad; quick, tricky strong and took his goal really well

Rodriguez - 6 no real chances came his way and he was clearly getting frustrated

Massengo - 6 played a further forward than I was expecting him to. Good to get some minutes into him and he looks lively.

Roberts - 6 standard Connor Roberts. Wound up their centre half nicely.

A good workout on easy street.

He didn’t say he’d leave, he said he should’ve left in the summer.
And he’s right.
He was absolutely woeful tonite. Looked an absolute shadow of what he has been. He wasn’t even good enough tonite to play at Salfords level.
Be very lucky to even make the bench this season on that showing.

Said earlier it was last roll of the dice if he started. I saw him at Forest in the earlier round and he was just not trying, or maybe not capable anymore. Foster back in two games times, Amdouini can play striker, and possibly Larsen might be better in that role than JR.Plus I can see VK trying to get another goal scorer in during January with Foster involved in the Africa Cup If he just hangs around until Summer he will struggle to get a contract in the Championship. All depends if we wants to extend his career, but maybe right now questions are being asked why he was given a two year contract rather than one when SD left

If he is as bad as you are making out then that’s even more reason for him not to leave mid contract.
Jay is on around £1.5m a year. Up until recently that was the salary cap in division 2 for each team !!
So why should he have left in the summer ?

Because a season long loan deal to a lower division club with us covering say half is wages would suit all parties.

Berge was box to box, but often was picking the ball up from Muric, cullen style. He was immense.

Zahoury had a free ish role.

Massengo played in the middle, more advanced than I expected , but maybe that was because of the class of opposition.

It’s a tough school. 4 assists in a 4 nil win only warrants a 6.the same mark as someone who played the last 25 mins or so.

Some 5’s and 6’s for Tresor when he played the best part of 70 minutes against a team near the bottom of League 2 - should we be concerned?

I’d suggest that when he’s played the equivalent of a game and half across 3 substitute appearances, No.

:D That’s not the way to do it. After all, Jakubs Tash wrote off Foster after a similar amount of time - ‘hasn’t shown any signs of being a professional footballer’ is a comment that sticks in my mind.

I said this to people around me, Berge looked a lot better than he had been recently, but to me, it was down to the level of opposition. He’d struggle to pull off that role in the Prem.

Fair enough. I’m obviously not stupid enough to be writing him off but interested to hear off people who rates him as such and their reasons why.

70 minutes against a League 2 team you are dominating is a really good chance to show what you can do (or at least flashes). You could see he can play v Man Utd but he lacked energy and intensity imo.

Muric 7 Fits our way of play

Vitinho 6

O'Shea 7

Cork 7

Delcroix 7

Berge 8 box to box all night

Larsen 8

Benson 6

Zaroury 9

Odebert 8

Rodriguez 3 offered nothing against a poor league 2 team, sad to see.

Tresor 6 looks lazy can't work him out yet

Messengo 7 he gets stuck in, can pick a pass

Roberts 6

I think his energy was there to see in spells. The game was essentially gone when he came on. Not much happened after the 3rd went in, but in the second half he made a good few quick breaks out, one where him and JBL seemed to have rockets in their boots, another where he carried the ball from the half way line to the edge of their box.

I don’t think the low scores are anything to do with a bad performance, more just that the game was gone once he came on, which feels weird to say after 25/30 mins

I’m not writing Tresor off….

Foster was way below the levels expected last year. If he had been playing every game and we had slipped out of the play offs some other people may have had a different take on it.

Interesting that remember my comment. You pay more attention to me than my wife!

No but thanks for reminding me I'd missed Tresor out. 6 for me, he took a bit to get into the game properly but as others have said, it was gone by then. He was better second half.

Remember barnes renaissance came in the championship the PL is light years ahead quality wise I just don't see it myself, he would struggle in the championship how the hell you think he's going to emerge as some sort of a threat this season beggars belief he's done at this level.

The likes of Jay and Cork will be invaluable to VK this season behind the scenes. Lots of new young talent that will need to lean on them.

Because a season long loan deal to a lower division club with us covering say half is wages would suit all parties.
That’s still £750k a year. I don’t think the likes of Barrow, Crewe and the other types of team some people are suggesting are his level can afford to spend half their team budget on one player.

This is a crazy wild suggestion but maybe VK preferred to keep him and maybe JayRod preferred to stay ?

Berge was box to box, but often was picking the ball up from Muric, cullen style. He was immense.

Zahoury had a free ish role.

Massengo played in the middle, more advanced than I expected , but maybe that was because of the class of opposition.

Thank you for your reply!

Good to hear that Berge can perform this role for us. I'd like to see him in that same position and have Ramsey, Amdouni, Zaroury or Tresor in the advanced midfield number 10 position.

Berge should keep it simple and play those brilliant through balls and cross passes with the vision he has. Can make those rushes on the ball and then play the ball in for our attackers. Be a threat from outside the box with distance shooting.

Muric 7 - pretty much nothing to do but great distribution as always
Vitinho 7 - faded in second but looked really good in the first half with some great runs infield.
Decroix 7 - much better at LB today than Villa at home.
Cork 7 - comfortable throughout
O' Shea 7 - same as Cork but needs to work on distribution
Berge 9 - fantastic. Strong, powerful, creative and kept everything ticking over.
Zaroury 9 - 4 assists and seemed to be everywhere tonight. The assist for JBL in particular was fantastic.
Bruun Larsen 7 - would love to see him start on Saturday. Took his goal well and was constantly finding space on the right.
Benson 5 - not on long enough
Rodriguez 5 - agree with others that he just seemed off it tonight. Still think there’s a role for him in the squad though
Odobert 7 - direct and flashes of brilliance. Drifted out a little in the second half but a really good showing again

Tresor 5 - didn’t seem ready for the physicality of the game but still early days and sure there’s more to come
Roberts 6 - came on and looked solid
Massengo 7 - some really nice touches and can see he’s not afraid of putting his foot in

Everything has to be taken with a pinch of salt tonight as we played an out of form league 2 team but you can only beat what’s in front of you. Thought we did a really professional job and I’m sure it was a great opportunity for VK to look at some of the players who’ve not been starting. Was in the Salford end tonight so had to keep quiet throughout but the away end was electric for the majority of the game.

Onto a big game on Saturday and hopefully we see a few from tonight in or around the starting XI against Newcastle!

As in many discussions on this board, there is an alternative middle ground. (We don't have to choose extreme examples).
Of course, I wasn't suggesting the likes of Barrow, and in any case there's no way would Jay have gone there. I was suggesting that a loan move to decent Championship club would have been (potentially) a good outcome for all 3 parties.

I didn’t say you were but some posters on this thread have suggested that is his level.
If either party thought that was a good outcome then why did it not happen ?
As I said maybe the player and the manager thought that staying was the best outcome - given that’s what happened.
Maybe the manager who has been here just over a year has more trust in Jay than some fans who have “supported” him for the last 10 years ?

Muric 7 looked confident, composed. Had very little to do
Vitinho 7 still think he shouldn't be far off the first team, versitile player
Delcroix 7 best game I've seen him have
O Shea 7 standard
Cork 7 just what you expect from jack. Tough tackling did everything he needed too
Berge 8 will be a star for us this season
Zaroury 9 - came inside a lot which I liked, great performance
Bruun Larsson 8 like the look of him, think he will start soon
Odobert 8 - great performance
Benson 6 - not sure what to make of him this year, seems to have lost his way.
Jay Rod 5, not his best performance but our most experienced lad up top, keep him involved

Massengo 7 looks classy
Ramsey 6 - didn't get much chance
Roberts 6 - standard
Al Dakhil 6 - didn't get much chance
Tresor 6 - really unsure on this lad. PASS IT MIKE

I don't think we disagree really. The only area where we perhaps differ, is that I think Jay and his agent should have been pushing for a loan move with a view to the future.
If he plays hardly any football this season and then is out of contract, he will find it more difficult to find a new club on a decent wage - (look at Andros Townsend).
If however he had a successful loan period at Championship level then he would have been enhancing is value and chances of a decent move when his contract expires.
Of course, he is Burnley through and through so he may have dismissed such an option, without any discussion.

To play regular for a side his level
But a side playing at 'his level' couldn't wouldn't pay him the salary he's earning at Burnley. Plus, come next summer when his Burnley contract's expired, having had a quiet/restful season this year might subsequently allow him to remain fit enough to keep earning a lower league salary for an extra year or two.

Just interested to understand whether you went to the game ?
I didn’t so haven’t scored.
On the extended highlights Zaroury made all 4 goals and also nearly scored with the keeper making a very good save. From the BBC live text service and sky sports reporting it sounded like Zaroury was at the heart of pretty much everything we did.

How can you score him the same score as 2 players who only played 30 minutes of the game ?
