Up near Hexham. It's already been renamed on Google Maps, which tickled me.

I despair of our society. Why in Gods name would anyone take a chainsaw to a well known and loved landmark in the middle of the night.

Such as shame. It's arguably the most famous part of the "Military Way" which is the most visible piece of the wall that runs for about 20 miles (84 miles in total) from Bowness on Sea to Wallsend.

If this is for real it's absolutely mind boggling. I can't help but suspect it's a wind up. It's an iconic tree in an amazing location right beside a gap in Hadrian's Wall. The "Twice Brewed Inn" is very close by and that's a brilliant pub with it's own overnight rooms, brewery and restaurant and it's own visiting star gazing professor who dishes out telescopes after dark and then shows you what to look at. The walks from there along the wall are great, including the Sycamore Gap. I've been a couple of times and I'm booked again in October.

Not sure what you mean. Well I was out and about when I saw this thread and hadn't had chance to check the news. My initial reaction was somebody could have been doing a bit of photoshop ping and putting out fake news, although absolutely devastating if that wasn't the case. I've looked at the news now and seems it's actually genuine.

That’s a disgrace.
A group of us walked along Hadrians Wall to raise funds for the grassroots football club we coach at and the tree was obviously one of the landmarks we saw along the way.
Shame the culprit appears to have known what they were doing so that it didn’t fall on them

They're just kids messing about... (said about the drunk, coked-up chavs harassing people on the train)...
It's just a crisp packet... (said about a chav contributing to filling up the streets of Manchester with shite)...
They're just green fields... (said about the relentless concreting over of the Ribble Valley)...
Tourists are a good thing... (said about the countless and growing drunk fights in Bowness)...
It's this kind of attitude that has and is ruining this country... We have lost our moral and cultural compass!

Done the walk several times. It's hard to imagine anyone carting a chainsaw to and from the scene to the road or car park.
Not everyone would have to go far to do something like this and I expect much of any police investigation will centre around local landowners who may not welcome the constant stream of visitors.

Absolutely no chance this is some random clown who fancied a bit of random vandalism.
It’s a professional job that requires know-how and specialist tools. Somebody’s been paid by someone to do this, likely a local farmer/landowner who has got fed up with the number of visitors to the area.

It appears that way.
A 20 minute walk for a young lad isn't a long walk and chainsaws aren't exactly heavy.
Bigger question for me is why would you?

I’d imagine this is either some kid with mental issues or he’s been paid to fell it by someone with a grudge towards the NT? or local authority perhaps ? Looks a “ good” clean job and quite staggering that anyone would do this .

They aren't light either. To cut down a tree that size you'd have to know what you were doing, particularly if it was done in the dark.

First arrest of many possibly. I'm struggling to believe a 16 year old acting alone could do this.

They weigh nowt, a long cut chainsaw is about 7Kg, and cutting a tree down in one isn't that hard, scaling it and cutting it down in lumps is a different beast. My camera with the long lens weighs more and I carry that for miles over the moors; and I'm in my 60's.
Time will tell the whole story, but it's a sad story as the tree isn't there now.

That's the whole point.
You can rebuild / replace an iconic building, structure, statue etc., but you can't rebuild a tree, and it will take centuries to regrow similar.
Vandalising /felling a healthy tree is one of the worst forms of vandalism. Irreparable, irreplaceable.
