Stokes missing too, so not sure where he fits in playing just as a batsman - possibly Root

Re: Cricket World Cup
I'd forgotten that this started today! I see myself as a fairly big cricket fan but, with the footy underway and rugby WC in progress, it's somehow passed me by.
Butler says he would've chosen to bowl first if he'd won the toss but (without looking at the records) I think England tend to do pretty well batting first. Often racking up a big score and putting too much pressure on the chasing team, hopefully more of that today.

Can't help but feel VAR would work better if they told each other to rock and roll the replays

It looks like everything I hate about stadium. 130k is just nonsense. Atmosphere will be terd and you won't be able to see bugger all. A vanity project for Modi.

After 24 overs we are 128.4 so nearly halfway and evenly poised.

Tendulkar in the commentary box. Is he really 50? He still looks like a young lad.
England 152/4 in 28th over. Root on 47 & Buttler 19.

Re: Cricket World Cup
We need 300+ to be competitive I think but Butler gone now.
If we don't lose too many more wickets in the next 10 overs, we should do that with Livingstone, Woakes, Sam C still to come (Rashid and Wood aren't complete mugs either).
Still looks a pretty even game at this stage though.

Re: Cricket World Cup
Root gone! 300 looks a long way away at the moment. Some questionable shot selection from England this morning. But, credit to NZ. They've bowled tidily.

Re: Cricket World Cup
263 for 9 with two left.
Losing wickets at regular intervals have been the problem, nearly everyone has got themselves in though.
Be interesting to see how NZ get on.

The last two Rashid & Wood did superbly well to get us to 282.

I was reading last week they're expecting scores of 260-280 in this world cup rather than the 350-400 people come to expect these days.

Re: Cricket World Cup
When I said I didn't think it would be as close as the previous final I didn't think it would be one of the most one sided games at a world cup ever between 2 top sides.

Re: Cricket World Cup
Well played New Zealand, totally dominated our bowlers.
Re: Cricket World Cup
Let's just hope NZ have peaked too early and we improve....10 fold . ..you're right, that's a real pasting.

Busted flush is Livingstone now. Surprised he made the squad, did little for Lancs this season in limited over competitions.

Re: Cricket World Cup
His bowling figures were good today to be fair - it was Woakes & Curran who cost us in the first innings.northeastclaret wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2023 10:49 amBusted flush is Livingstone now. Surprised he made the squad, did little for Lancs this season in limited over competitions.

Re: Cricket World Cup
Woakes is fantastic in English conditions, struggles badly anywhere else. Never been totally convinced about Curran. As for Livingstone - I don't think he's anywhere near good enough at this levelClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Oct 15, 2023 3:35 pmHis bowling figures were good today to be fair - it was Woakes & Curran who cost us in the first innings.

England 11/4
Afghanistan 4/11
The odds don’t suggest we are going well either CT.
But come on CT we are only chasing 285

Re: Cricket World Cup
On yesterday’s Rugby World Cup thread I (tongue in cheek) suggested a fun treble on Afghanistan, Fiji and South Africa and it looks like the first leg is almost up.
Re: Cricket World Cup
Abysmal performance by England. Look a shadow of themselves.
Re: Cricket World Cup
England's bowling attack is nowhere near as strong as it was 4 years ago. Not convinced by Buttler as a captain either, just doesn't seem to have much about him?
Re: Cricket World Cup
Pretty embarrassing defeat really and to not be able to bat for the full 50 overs against this lot says it all but it’s only what we deserved to be honest

Re: Cricket World Cup
The view seemed to be that Stokes was fit enough to play but the management decided it was better to err on the side of caution and save Ben for the “stiffer tests that lie ahead”
