R.I.P Another Claret

Dermot Martin, a lifelong Claret, sadly passed away yesterday at the age of 69. Dermot posted occasionally on here as kindonesque I think. He lived in Poole and loved to watch the team down South. Older posters may remember him as a journalist on the Burnley Express in the late 70s & early 80s.

Dermot was diagnosed with cancer in April and it spread quite rapidly. He was in a hospice but wanted to go home & passed away there peacefully. He leaves his wife & 4 grown up children. Loved The Clarets with Harry Potts, Steve Kindon & Sean Dyche being particular heroes.

RIP Dermot. I went to Teds with Dermot, although he was a year younger than me. He was a cheerful, intelligent guy and I think his career took him as far as the FT. For some time he was interested in the Accrington Pals though I don't know if he published anything.

So sad , such a brilliant guy. Always a smile on his face and a mischievous chuckle. Played with him for Pike Hill Bombers in the Burnley Sunday League. After he left Burnley always enjoyed bumping into him when Burnley played down south. Thank you for letting us know sjb.

He was a decent player despite his lack of height. As a little boy he spent many weeks in Stoke Mandeville Hospital and wore calipers on his legs but I never heard him complain. Worked on the Southampton Evening Echo for many years and latterly freelanced for the London papers & even drove a taxi in Poole. A life well-lived. R.I.P. 'Diddy.'

Indeed one of the saddest days of my life. Dermot Jnr. just came round with his sister Lydia to tell me the sad news. I've known Dermot for over thirty years. He became one of my best friends. He was Burnley through and through. The most ardent supporter you could find.

We've attended just so many games together over the years and I shall miss him dearly. It just won't be the same without him.

RIP, Dermot.

That’s so true about it not being the same and friends like this always come more into your mind on those special football days.

I remember him from St Ted's. I was in the same class as him for a few years. Very sad news. I didn't know he was a 'neighbour' of mine, down the road in Poole. RIP Dermot.

So sad, especially remembering he was always a such a bundle of energy. I had the pleasure of working with Dermot at the Burnley Express for four or five years in the 1970s, in the days when going to work were fun as well as busy. Like northeastclaret he played with me on Sundays with Pike Hill Bombers, a typical winger, enigmatic and unpredictable. He'd lived in Poole Dorset for almost 40 years, after joining the Southern Evening Echo newspaper. He had a colourful career to say the least, and it must have been a barrel of laughs with four kids in the house. Dermot had kept in regular touch with former Burnley Express Clarets correspondent Peter Higgs. RIP Dermot

I wanted to thank you all for the lovely messages about my Dad. The greatest man I will know and a true Claret. I am blessed with the opportunity to support this team with him in my heart every match day. I've passed the messages on to my family and we send you all our love.

Attended Dermot’s funeral and wake today in Poole in Dorset. Great send-off to a proper Claret, and great to meet the OP sjb. Also met up with a mutual friend in former Burnley Express Clarets reporter Peter Higgs, in rude health at 78

I also attended. Extremely moving. Nice to meet his extended family along with the OP sjb.

Okay so let’s do it for Dermot at Bournemouth tomorrow. We had a good result there last year in the cup and there’s no reason that we can’t emulate that.
