Kevin Young

Got into a random conversation with a friendly Mackem on the next table in ‘Spoons in East Croydon last night and on discovering my allegiance he said “my brother-in-law played for Burnley”. Turned out to be Kevin Young and prompted me to recall that he was one of my favourite players back in the early 80s. Remember him smashing a goal in at the Beehole End in torrential rain as we won promotion (1982 ?)
Apparently he’s now a prison officer up in the North East. Not a post-football option you’d imagine our players nowadays would need to contemplate.

I met someone in a pub in Walthamstow in '93 who had gone to school with Kevin Young. From what he said, I'd suggest he's tough enough to be a prison officer. Good player for us. I was there that day the last match in 81/82 when he scored the goal against Chesterfield to clinch us the title on that flood of a pitch.

Vince Overson told me a few years ago that he'd become a prison officer but he was one of those players who just sort of disappeared after playing in the Netherlands. I always thought Youngy should have gone on to have a better career than he did, looked a really good player in the team in the early 80s.

Norman Jones on the pitch with a fork before the game. Had there not been such a big crowd there is no way that game would have gone ahead. That game all but secured us the 3rd Div Championship, Carlisle needed to win by a hatful the following evening to deny us.

Recall Kevin Young having an excellent game against Newcastle at home on Boxing Day 1978 or 79. Won 3-2 with Billy Hamilton scoring a great header at the Beehole End to open the scoring.
He joined Bury with Frank Casper and Dobbo in charge and they beat us 5-3 in a league Cup tie at Gigg Lane( was it a second leg?). Kevin Young again played wide left with Joe Jakub next to him and they both had tremendous games.

He once scored against us when he was a Burnley player - while on loan at Port Vale

I also thought that he would have gone onto bigger and better football clubs. Fantastic left foot and that rare ability to pass very long and accurate to switch play. Something we don't have now.

We had a few players like Kevin Young at the time that you thought had some talent. David Miller was another.

With no disrespect but Young was levels above David Miller.

Bumped into Kevin Young a number of years ago on holiday in Spain. The children were wearing Burnley shirts and he jumped up from a bar to introduce himself. Always thought Young was a good player for us.

Cav lives not too far from me, somewhere near Bedford and is quite active on Facebook. When i first connected with him, going back over a decade, I mentioned that i had lived in Arlesey, a Bedfordshire village but doubt he would know it. His response was go and check who was Manager of Arlesey Town FC when they won the FA Vase in 1995.....

I travelled up to Durham to speak to Kevin for The Forgotten Fifteen - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Forgotten-Fift ... 1781324247 - just £2 on Kindle, Clarets! - in 2012. He was cracking company over a few cups of coffee.

(I came on here to look for news about Leighton James and searched for Bury while I was here).

No news on Taffy as yet which I suppose could be considered good news. I was talking to Dobbo recently about Taffy playing for him at Bury; Dobbo had nothing but good things to say about him.

Taffy was brilliant with me as well. I spoke to him in a Liberal club in Timperley as he was going on holiday from Manchester Airport the next day and he was staying at his mother-in-law's.

We then went for a few pints in Bury when I took him to a game in 2012 and when The Forgotten Fifteen came out, he came to the signing before a game. He drove the five hours up from South Wales, we later found out while he had prostate cancer, on a Saturday morning. The club treated him and the other players shabbily that day; they couldn't even get a half-time cuppa, I had to buy them one from the refreshments hut.

That's right.
Couldn't quite remember. Think that was the season we put 7 past them earlier in the season.

I was able to pluck that one out of the air very quickly. It was the day after my brother's wedding and it's their ruby wedding anniversary this Saturday.

I remember that 7-0 victory as it was Children In Need weekend and some bloke on Radio Lancashire on the Friday night had pledged to give £50 for every goal we scored against Port Vale. Presumably he was a Clarets fan so he must have been delighted & gutted in equal measure!
