Re: The Reckoning
Not with unconscious decisions based on uncertainty no. If you have the opinion everybody knew about saviles activities & still let him carry on regardless that's different but clearly that isn't the case.
Re: The Reckoning
Saville was lauded and protected by like minded perverts in the the BBC, politicians, the church, the judiciary, the police, the Royal family, and the establishment in general. Little wonder children were and still are vulnerable until the likes of him ,Brand (allegedly) grooming gangs etc are taken out and similar deviants are terrified of the consequences of their evil.

He's got some batshit mental ideas but he's not suggested playing O'Shea in midfield.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2023 10:45 pmIt’s a lot easier when you accept that Jakub is just the latest invention from ablueclaret.

Re: The Reckoning
Finished watching it last night. Coogan was excellent. Uncomfortable watch but I thought it was very well made and gave victims a voice.
Although a controversial program from the start, I think it gave an important representation of how he could snap. None of the other documentaries depicted that because he was always ‘on’ when the cameras were rolling.
The BBC have a lot to answer for, but I think it’s more concerning how the NHS seemed to let him get away with it, even though everyone seemingly knew what he was up to. NHS staff have a legal duty of care and they failed with that.
I’m not surprised though. I worked for Leeds teaching hospital for 10 years up until June and management still seemingly sweep things under the carpet to avoid bad press. They get paid so well they dread the repercussions.
I’ve learnt about certain incidents in the news paper months after the event, even though it should be about lessons learnt to prevent the same issues happening again

Re: The Reckoning
People definitely knew. I said earlier in the post my friend was a Ward Sister at LGI and wouldn't let him on the ward, despite his threats of having her removed. She always stood her ground. That was in the late 80's.

I was a student nurse at the LGI when the truth finally came out. All the old school nurses had tales about his inappropriate behaviour
Re: The Reckoning
Will never not be baffling how people didn't know he was a wrong 'un from day dot. About as obvious as it gets surely.

Re: The Reckoning
I fear that many people knew exactly what was going on but were too afraid to speak out.
You'd hope in our present culture it couldn't happen again.

I watched all four episodes last night. Vile human being!
I also read last night that his mum was born in Burnley. I’m not if that’s true or not.

Re: The Reckoning
Nobody, because Starmer had no part to play in the decision to prosecute Saville or not.Thatcher on the other hand was told about JS and still went ahead and give him the knighthood

Re: The Reckoning
Small details bother me. In the first episode a chap who had been bashed by Savile's henchman had blood all over his face and not a drop on his pristine white shirt.

Re: The Reckoning
i think all the people who came out afterwards who claimed to know what he was up to and kept quiet have blood on their hands.
dont buy into this "too scared to say anything" lark, even in the 70s and 80s the red tops would have lapped up a story like that, your message would have got out.

Re: The Reckoning
The thing that makes me "laugh" about this is the BBC calling this a "Reckoning". There hasnt been a reckoning. He got away with it, for the whole of his sordid, perverted existence he got away with everything he did. Reckoning my @rse.

Re: The Reckoning
Spot on.
I thought the series was well done and Coogan was brilliant but for me all it really did was reinforce how many people got away with this.
The sick f-uck never got his reckoning and the hundreds of victims and their families never got their justice in seeing him prosecuted and behind bars.
The individuals who facilitated the crimes directly never got their reckoning - they should have been imprisoned too.
The police, politicians, the BBC and his other employers and charity boards never got their reckoning either. They ignored complaints and reports (let’s not insult people and belittle what they knew by calling it gossip or rumours) and they consciously chose to take no action in return for viewing figures or donations.
You hope that all those culpable suffered with their own guilt for their rest of their lives. But even if they did they have still got away with it in the knowledge that nobody dared investigate them given that many of the guilty would be the ones commissioning the investigation.
So nearly 500 people (at least) will have to make do with an apology and a constant reminder with programmes like this as to how they were let down by the very people that were supposed to protect them.

Re: The Reckoning
From watching it I thought the name came from the emphasis he put in his “faith” and how he’d try and square it off when to got to the ‘Pearly Gates’?
Something else he probably played on to make himself seem a better person.
The conduct of those at the BBC etc was/is disgraceful though.
