No but I’ve seen enough of him this season to agree with you.

This age group coming through is really special imo

I thought he was decent. Serbia scored a screamer against him. But apart from that he had little to do apart from pass out from that back under little pressure

Annoyingly, I feel it’s been the case for as long as I can remember… England u21s are the future etc.
Realistically we only ever see 2/3 make the step up to the first team. That’s not a dig at their talents either, it seems to be the first team manager that has issues picking them/sticking with the dinosaurs. How Jordan Henderson still gets a pick with the players coming through at the minute will always baffle me.

Southgate played most of the U21s he was managing, prior to becoming first team manager.
The oroblem with being picked so young, is that most are not ready for the big time. A brief flash and then they fade.
2 or 3 of any U21 make it at most. Usually 5 years later.

I can see Rico Lewis and Harvey Elliott getting call ups to the senior squad at some stage

None of them will get call ups until Walker, Phillips or Henderson retire otherwise Southgate won't drop any of them

I tend to disagree if I’m honest,
I think Southgate has bedded plenty of youngsters from Foden, Saka, Bellingham. I do genuinely believe if they are good enough they will be given a chance.
I suspect Rico Lewis and Harvey Elliot have an excellent chance of making the squad for the euros

Foden, Saka and Bellingham had all played in Champions League games prior to senior starts for England. To me they don’t need bedding in. They were the best players available in their positions at the time. It should go off talent and form.
James Ward-Prowse hasn’t been given a chance, and he’s definitely been overlooked for favourites. And before you look it up, 8 mins against Montenegro amongst other substitute appearances isn’t being given a chance.
There’s numerous others I could name who shon in the u21s and their clubs but have been overlooked.

You’re potentially right.
My opinion is the likes of Maguire, Phillips and Henderson just don’t have strong enough competition to displace them.
Ward Prowse could possibly do with more game time but he’s not the answer. He’s a good player but realistically he shouldn’t be anywhere near our starting eleven.

Tbh, I don't have an issue with Maguire. He's in the Pickford camp for me, usually plays well for England and for that will give them benefit of the doubt. Pickford, Ramsdale, Pope (never gets a look in), whoever starts in net doesn't bother me. Maguire, Guehi, Stones, Colwill, White, Tomori, Dunk, you could pick any of them to partner Stones for me, even Walker has played there.
Henderson and Phillips you could argue shouldn't be there though. Rice, Bellingham, Maddison, JWP, Gallagher, Trent, Foden, Mount (at times) all offer more than those two.
If fringe players aren't getting minutes against Australia in a friendly, when do they? Before you know it we're entering another tournament, the u21s never got a taste in the friendlies/qualifiers, and we rely on the old guard who come up short again.

I'd have Harvey Elliot and Curtis Jones before Henderson, Mount or Gallagher.
Phillips needs to move on in January then he's a good squad player for England but for me anybody not playing regular shouldn't be picked
