Sardinia
I know we have some very well travelled readers on here. Looking at going to Sardinia next year, probably late Summer/early Autumn. Needs to be fairly close to either Cagliari or Alghero airports. Other than that our other priorities are being in town, and probably not Cagliari the city, that has a good range of restaurants, a train station, and fairly close to the coast.Any feedback would be really appreciated

Re: Sardinia
Went to Alghero in March. Wouldn’t be in a hurry to go back. There is a historical quarter that’s not bad and if you get to the street market that is excellent. food wise it is pizza all the way and I’m not a pizza fan.
We went specifically to do Neptunes grotto but March was to early to get a boat across to it and when we got there by the one bus per day we found it left 1 hour later. As it was 650 steps down and up Mrs T. didn’t think she could make it so we sat in the bar for the hour.
Got the train to Sassari, which we did like but it’s a hike from the station up to the best of the town.
Got a bus down the coast, good views, to Bosa. Nothing special there either.
Thank god we had each others company.

Try the ice cream from a home made ice cream shop.

Thanks "Tricky Trevor" for your valuable feedback. It helps create a perception of the island-idyllic on the surface but all a bit bitty and a lot of compromise. By contrast we went to Sicily a few years ago, and whilst we DID stay in Palermo, a city, on that occasion it was a fabulous week with so much to do and see, and some wonderful street/food markets and restaurantsTricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sat Oct 14, 2023 10:24 amWent to Alghero in March. Re: Sardinia
might help a bit was there in sept ..but to the west coast orosei beach...all inclusive ...great place, soft sandy beach, great hotel but not much around that area ...quite a few families hired a car to get around and see the island more....in truth the island is mostly about the beaches not much inland sightseeing ...went with easyJet to Olbia but BA and jet2 go there as well ...think if you want beaches and chill out holiday look to the north ....if you want cities history ect go to the south
Re: Sardinia
Spent quite a lot of time in Sardinia whilst in the RAF. We were based near Cagliari. Loved it there and there’s some nice beaches. Been to Alghero a couple of times and really enjoyed it. Nice beach, nice food.

We did the SE of Sicily, from Traormina around to Ragusa, Montalbano fans. Flew into Catania and car hired. Loved it all. The three mentioned Syracuse, Noto(a one street town but what a beautiful street), Scicli and the S. coast beaches.warksclaret wrote: ↑Sat Oct 14, 2023 10:50 amThanks "Tricky Trevor" for your valuable feedback. Re: Sardinia
Very much in two minds but my favoured option might become flying to Bari in southern Italy and finding a location to holiday in that region. So much to choose from in ItalyTricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sat Oct 14, 2023 1:13 pmWe did the SE of Sicily, from Traormina around to Ragusa, Montalbano fans. Flew into Catania and car hired. Loved it all. Re: Sardinia
Polignano a Mare, just south of Bari has a stunning beach and loads of restaurants. Monopoly a bit further south is very pretty but much smaller. See the UNESCO village https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/787/ full of white Trulli and also historic Leccce

Re: Sardinia
Loads of places like this in the heart of Polignano

I can also recommend Taormina and Siracusa in Sicily. There is a train between the two places. We spent a few days in each.

Re: Sardinia
Did Bari last year. Flew Malta-Brindisi and hired a car. Drove to Lecce where we spent the night, then motored to Locorotondo via Ostuni. In Ostuni made friends with some English Clarets who spotted my Clarets top We stayed at Loco in 2 fabulous trulli with a fantastic swimming pool and visited Polignano, Bari, Cisternino, Martina Franca and Alberobello - all fantastic places! Spent the last day and night in Matera then flew Bari-Malta.warksclaret wrote: ↑Sat Oct 14, 2023 2:51 pmVery much in two minds but my favoured option might become flying to Bari in southern Italy and finding a location to holiday in that region. Thats a good shout Longsider-and interestingly I had made a note of Polignano from some initial research I did.It ticks a lot of boxes for us plus has a train station giving us scope to travel to other towns.Thank youTheOriginalLongsider wrote: ↑Sat Oct 14, 2023 5:10 pmPolignano a Mare, just south of Bari has a stunning beach and loads of restaurants. Im in Cagliari right now, can’t go too far wrong here. Excellent beaches and food, weather etc. talking of Sicily, one of my favourite trips in the past was visiting the islands just north with Stromboli, Lipari and a few others. That has everything including a constantly erupting volcano!
