Off to London this weekend with the family, taking in the Brentford game and general site seeing . Any tips and general advice / suggestions for the tubes?
I've not been on the tube for about 20 years. Is it best getting a family travelcard for our 3 nights and days in London? we have two boys ages 14 and 9 so we don't need to pay for the youngest, and can we get this from Euston when our train gets in?
Also need to try and get to Brentford without getting lost from Old Street tube station

I'm on the 'overground' train (if its running) from Waterloo to Brentford.

You don’t need to buy a ticket. Just tap in and out with your contactless bank card and it’ll automatically charge you the cheapest fare for your journey.
IE if you do a few trips it’ll charge you for a travel card.

Also if your 14 yr old looks young enough we just bundle them through the larger accessible gate with the adult

Tap in and tap out and it'll work out the best price for you at the end of the day.

To get to Brentford, I'd recommend getting the Northern line from Euston to Waterloo. 15 mins max. Then get a train from Waterloo mainline station to Kew Bridge which is right outside the ground.

Yes you’ll need a different card for each passenger

Whatever you do, don’t pay cash.

Sherborne to Kew Bridge via Clapham Junction for us .

Although a debit/credit card can only be used for one passenger’s travel, I think you can use multiple cards from one account. i.e. if you have a joint bank or credit card account or are an authorised user alongside the account holder, you can each use your own card to pay for travel from the one account. Worth checking?

Multiple cards from the same account are fine. It can be a problem travelling with children who are old enough to have to pay but don't have their own contactless debit card.

Agree a plan in advance re what to do if the doors close whilst you're boarding and one of you ends up left on the platform or traveling on the Tube.

There's little notice that the doors are going to close and It's possible for your group to be only partly boarded when the doors slam shut.

General advice would be for whoever is on the train to get off at the next stop and wait for the others stuck on the platform to catch the next available train. And tell a staff member and/or the driver of course

Very nearly happened to me when friends were visiting and their child decided to jump on the train alone just as the doors were closing.

Only if they are linked to separate cards Tony. I have a debit card and it is also on my phone, but i couldnt use my phone for me and card for another traveller.

No, you'd have to buy the train tickets separately through Trainline. There is a tube line which goes to Gunnersbury which I think is nearby the ground but I found the train cheap and easy.

Do they still use the Oyster Card system?
Think they had daily price "capping " whereby you could travel as much as you like in a day for a set fee.
Course, you have to obtain an OC first if you haven't got one.

It still exists but since they allowed you to use your debit card to fulfil the same function most people no longer bother with Oyster.

I returned mine and got the £3 deposit back

It is as long as you stay within the TFL zones. I'm way out on the other edge of zone 6 but I can still tap in/out to catch a train to London the transit onto the Tube once I get there.

Brentford appears to be in zone 4 so well within the area

It becomes a bit tricky if you're outside the zones as you'd need a paper ticket to cover that portion outside of the TFL area

You can definitely tap in/out for most train services without having to get a separate ticket:

From Euston I was going to get the Victoria line to Green Park - Piccadilly line to South Ealing.
For those who know London, is this a decent route to Brentford?

It's fine if you want to stick wholly on the tube. Changing at Green Park is a pain though as the lines are a long way from each other and it's a fair walk between the two. There's also a 25 minute walk from South Ealing

Other options would be to get the Victoria line to Vauxhall tube. Exit tthe tube and it's a short walk to Vauxhall train station, then catch a train to Kew Gardens which is only short walk from the stadium. Direct trains are at 20 minutes and 50 minutes past the hour.

Or an alternative is to get the Northern line to Waterloo then catch a regular train to Kew Bridge. Train departure times are similar.

Personally, if I was new to London, I would go for the Waterloo option

When I mentioned Kew Gardens for the Vauxhall route it should have said Kew Bridge. Got carried away

Picking up a few points.

You can use contactless payment on National Rail (Waterloo or Vauxhall) to Kew Bridge.

Make sure you always use the same card throughout the day otherwise the system will think there are two of you and won't aggregate the journeys. Also make sure you tap in and out every time even if gates are not in use.

Gunnersbury is nearest tube, South Ealing also ok.

Best thing you can do is go on https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/ - transport for london website - fares page. You can get all your questions answered on there.

Prices:
Daily travel card or using contactless are the same price.
Kew Bridge is in Zone 3 .so if you are coming to Euston and want to travel in central London then go to Kew Bridge and return to Euston the fare will be capped at 9.60 for an adult. You can use tube , bus ,national rail, overground within zones 1to 3. for this price.

Personally I'd go with the tube option.

Victoria line to Victoria and then District line to Gunnersbury and then a ten minute or so walk. Tubes are more frequent than the train and it's a shorter change.

There are lots of options (you can even get a train up to Willesden Green and then another back down to Kew Bridge for instance) and which will be the quickest will depend on exactly when you set off.

Basically it should be about an hour though. Be aware that some stations round the ground are closed or have a queuing system after the match if you're in a rush to get away.

For those transiting through Euston to Waterloo for the first time it can be quite confusing as there's 2 Northern line branches, each of which go north and south.

You need the Northern Line, Southbound, Charing Cross branch which is platform 2

I can't edit my above post but having just looked, the fast train to Kew Bridge from Waterloo is only twice an hour.

Stinks on Tube

Loads of suggestions on routes on here, not going to add to that, but 3 tips.

Tapping in and out on cards is great, I see CT mentioning it. If you have a railcard though you need an Oyster card. Set up an account at TFL, order a card, costs £5. It’ll arrive through the post, confirmed it’s registered on the tfloyser site. https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk/oyster. Next time you go to London get to a manned tube ticket office and ask then to add your railcard to your oyster card. They do it at one of the ticket or top up machines. 1/3 off tfl prices

TFL Go app tells you the best route live, download the app, found this better than googlemaps suggestions as it takes data from the tfl system direct.

Buses!!!! Londoners use buses. Don’t ignore the little red boxes on googlemaps or tfl go. Buses can be much quicker, have lots more stops, zoom along bus lanes, avoid walking (London is either too hot, cold or raining) and cheaper than tge tube. The stops have a display showing live info of bus arrival times.

What would you say is the best chance of a quick getaway on the Tube? Walk a bit further to a station that's a bit out of the way?

Personally I'd walk to Acton Town, it's a little further but it's a stop further out and has two lines (District and Piccadilly) so probably a bit quieter.

on the TFL planner for Saturday it doesn't say anything about Gunnersbury being closed - please can I ask how you know? Is it a normal thing for Brentford home games?

If you haven’t got a railcard then I’d definitely get one, in your case a family and friends railcard would save you £100 on your journey from Burnley to Kings Cross and back.
You can even get them free if you have enough Tesco club card points.
Once in London and like Claret Wizzard suggests, ask a tube employee at an underground station to add the discount to your oyster card if you have one and you get discount on TFL transport also.
