Saw this on a FB group. Is this v Burnley? Possibly Ralph Coates closest to the camera?

If it is Coates is the other player Frank Casper ? Has a look of him. The strip would make sense against Liverpool.

It is Anfield and it is against Burnley (pic 5 at the link, but pic 4 explains it)

Yes it's Liverpool in the 60s.

I'd say that was Coates and the other player could be Dave Thomas?

Looking at the fixtures it seems most likely this was the FA Cup match 25th Jan 1969 which was lost 2-1 (Les Latcham). We played them away in the league in 1969/70 but that was in August and it seems unlikely the pitch would cut up as it has in the pic at that time of year.

Based on that I can only think the other player apart from Dave Thomas in pic 4 is Jim Thomson.

Think this is the FA Cup game at Anfield in Jan/ Feb 1969 which we lost 2-1. I was there on that side of the ground towards the Anfield Rd. end. Frank Casper scored our goal.

And we had a perfectly good goal disallowed which I think Les Latcham scored.

Les Latcham scored for us in the 35th minute when we were already 2 down.

Latcham actually scored our goal - it was Casper who had a goal disallowed 'unaccountably ruled offside' according to reports.

Also nice to see the lovable Scousers stoned the Clarets team coach after the game.

I did say Latcham - I knew he and Casper had both scored. It was shown on Match of the Day and it was clear the goal should have been allowed. Tommy Smith and Emlyn Hughes for Liverpool, the first from the penalty spot.

The penalty followed a handball from Fred Smith - he would have been sent off for it in today's game. I remember Jim Thomson unusually wearing the Number 11 shirt though he played at the back with Latcham further forward.

Thomson (H), Smith, Latcham, Bellamy, Waldron, Blant, Thomas, Coates, Casper, Collins, Thomson (J). Sub; Kindon replaced Bellamy after 64 mins.

Now I’ve seen the teams I’d suggest the player chasing back is Fred Smith.
Before seeing the teams I’d have gone Ray Ternent and then Fred Smith.
I know Ralph could play both flanks but strange to see him so deep as the FB but his work rate was never questioned.

The player in the background has the gait of Dave Thomas.

In the 68/69 season he was playing in midfield a lot if not all the time - remember the eight consecutive wins with lots of the youth cup winning team playing.

That player in the background of picture 4 might be Kindon then.

I went to the match with my dad and we gave Bernard smith and Leisure’s Dad a lift. Remember Les latcham filling in as striker and scoring.

Think it’s the “Liverpool Football Club” on the gable that gives it away, but who thought it was good idea to put a floodlight pylon at the front of the stand???

First glance it looked like Coates with Thomas in the background.

I suspect it was the only possible place to install it without damaging the existing stands.

I never knew that Anfield was originally the home of Everton.

Here's a nice aerial view of both grounds from 1966 showing both grounds:

Also stoned at least one supporter's coach as I remember a young girl from Tod was injured.

Anfield 1969 It was my first Burnley game as a 16 year old. My best mate was a Liverpool supporter and he had 2 tickets in the Kop end. We got the ferry over on a day trip. We came back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 but the match eventually ended 3-3. My mate wouldn't let me wear my Burnley scarf or cheer when we scored because we were in the Kop. My biggest memory from that day was watching Steve kindi literally thundering down the wing, the ground was almost trembling and he really was a sight to behold.
