Re: Remembering Jimmy Mac
But was he as good as Bobby Charlton?!
Re: Remembering Jimmy Mac
CleggHall, I mulled over the answer of who was the best of the 2. Both were true gentlemen, who had represented their Countries many many times.
While Mc had the greater dribbling skills and laid on a lot of passes for other forwards to score. While Charlton had a very powerful shot and scored a lot of his goals from distance. In my mind, there was nothing much to separate them, other than Mc played for Burnley, so he wins my vote.

Re: Remembering Jimmy Mac
My brother used to teach at a school in Rochdale where Bobby Charlton used to run his soccer school. My brother had the opportunity to chat to him and the first time my brother told Bobby he was a Burnley fan, Bobby waxed lyrical about Mac as a player. Charlton said he loved being on the same pitch as Mac and used to watch him with amazement, admiring his ball control, passing skills and vision.

I'm to young to remember him playing, however the limited times I've seen television clips of him he had it all. If he was English he'd of had numerous caps and accolades.

Did they ever play in the same side?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 5:28 pmJimmy Greaves told me that Jimmy Mac was the finest player he ever played with or against - that will do for me.

Of course. Praise indeed.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 6:56 pmMaybe for the Football League but for Greaves to say that when he played alongside Blanchflower says everything.
Re: Remembering Jimmy Mac
I watched JM and he would struggle in todays world because he would be less fit okay at a slower pace with a heavier ball and awful pitches
Despite all those problems and we all admire Muric finding players, JM could ping a pass across the field often with pin point accuracy and dribble that heavy ball on mud caked surfaces leaving defenders cold
So a reincarnated Mac with todays method and pitches would be the first on the team sheet for City Real or Barcelona- he was that good IMO

Re: Remembering Jimmy Mac
Lancashire football supporters were fortunate to watch Finney, Charlton, Mac and Douglas in the early 60s, each in their own way world class.
Re: Remembering Jimmy Mac
Re the best of players around Lancs, I'd have put Mathews instead of Douglas.
