Trafford, 40% pass accuracy

Stat just shown at half time. Trafford 33 passes with 40% accuracy.
He's been a good shot stopper, but our game is based on possession. That means he gave the ball away 20 times.
How can we play possession based with that stat?

Surely Vinny sees those same stats? How can he persist playing him?

Put this on the Trafford thread.
For reference, he is NOT the problem. He's actually played fairly well, again.

His stopping has been fine. His distribution has been terrible. All they need to do us put him under pressure to gain back possession

That's been the case for pretty much every player today, not just Trafford

The outball as opposed to the short pass into defenders is even worse
5/27 (19%)

The poor, deliberate, slow passing g is why Trafford should lose his place.

Half (at least) of the shots he saves are because of his terrible pass in the first place.
He's a f****** disaster.

Time for Muric.

Nearly every time we get to the half way line or just into the opposition half we nearly always end up passing it back to him, its so frustrating to watch, we then get closed down and he just launches it.

Regardless of what he cost and how good he may become, he now needs taking out of the firing line.

I defended him last week on the basis of a number of good saves despite the obvious deficiencies in the other aspects of his game. Today, however, he was shite in every part of his game.
When a team’s success is based on its ability to play out from the back, you simply cannot afford to play a keeper who cannot pass the ball. You could argue Muric might not be so effective at a higher level but it’s sure as hell time we found out!

Its funny, but I am not defending Trafford, but for England U-21's he does not get this criticism because the players he passes to are able to build play , rather than make mistakes or give it away. If we want a passing game from the back this is not the defence/midfield to do it with , and certainly not the League to experiment with it either

It’s quite clear we aren’t passing it out from the back with the amount of long balls Trafford is punting

Don’t care how many ‘good’ saves he makes, he is quite clearly the main issue.
The way we played last season meant Muric was one of, if not the most important player in possession. If we want to aim to replicate that this season (we have to try as we don’t have the personnel to do anything else) then our keeper has to have a strong short and long passing game. Trafford does not.

What's baffling to me, and I'm not saying this goalkeeper is better than the other, but last season the ball at the keeper's feet was a chance to attack and hurt the opposition. However, this season the same situation has put us on the back foot and usually leads to panic and losing possession. What's happened to that slick crisp passing ?
Our players look terrified of receiving the ball.

Combination of
- confidence (comparing complete opposite ends of the scale here)
- keeper who was extremely good with his feet vs one who’s ok
- missing Beyer (ability to break through pressure) and THB (line breaking passes)
- left back who can’t play out under pressure or play in midfield areas, compared to the talented Maatsen
- higher level, far better teams and pressing

First of all 30% of his successful passes that he made must have been the 5 yard balls he knocks to our centre halves within our box.
Not just blaming Trafford on his passing. I would imagine without looking at the stats if any of our outfield players got that big a percentage (well not far off). I lost count of the many times we gave the ball away so cheaply.

Their player in interview said they were told to watch out for the Burnley keeper coming way out off his line and look for shot, every other team knows

In fairness, cast your mind back to last season and the cries of ‘shoot’ when Muric would get the ball near the half way line. It’s not something that is new to how we play. If teams haven’t been watching how we play under Kompany and adapting their tactics, then more fool them.
Trafford was probably 3/4 yards too far out for their goal but it would be wrong to suggest being at the edge of the box, when we’re in possession, is something specific to him.

Pretty spot on there.
I’d say the spine of the team doesn’t have any leaders either but it is clear to see yes we looked fantastic last year but our player’s are 2 or three leaders short of being a good team. There are to many young players who go missing when the going gets tough.

In that case he might as well just launch it in the first place.
Play the old Colne Dynamoes system: keeper gets the ball, all the players hit the half way line, keeper launches the ball.
At least you don't lose the ball in your own half
