You could argue Trafford would’ve got closer to saving some of those goals.Taffy on the wing wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 9:50 pmOne absolute certainty is we look miles better with Muric in goal.
It’s also worth noting Everton didn’t press us as hard and as high as other teams have been doing.
Still, let’s be honest. Every game’s been awful whoever’s been selected.

It may be too big a leap for a few of our players but the gap most definitely isn’t insurmountable.
Re: Everton match thread
In fairness the cup games last season against UTD and Bournemouth were way better than anything we've done this season, and with a squad that didn't cost £100m. (So the step up in quality only partially explains things I think).

We don’t even give ourselves a chance that’s the frustrating thing . Absolutely toothless again. Didn’t even get mad tonight , just underwhelmed

Nope. Sorry, I'm not agreeing with that. I don't mind us losing, I don't mind us going down. Because yes, the Premier League is a leap. But we don't seem to be even trying. There's nothing about us which looks like we even want to attempt to pick up some points. And that, regardless of who we're playing, regardless of the gap, isn't good enough.Belgianclaret wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 10:03 pmHow about an unsurmountable gap in class between the championship and the PL ??

That's not far off, if either really wanted to be here they would have been, I believe the club would have gone to a certain extent to get them but the unwillingness to come here was the reason & that's not blaming the players it's their own prerogative where they decide to go.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 10:01 pmI'm not convinced that either Tella or Maatsen wanted to sign.
I'm not convinced that THB would have been a massive improvement on what we have.

Vinnie needs to give them a real rocket and get some fight in to the lot of them. Nowhere near good enough, no desire or fight for me and that’s the absolute minimum requirement in my eyes

Re: Everton match thread
Seriously doubt Trafford would have saved any of the goals........& it was nice to see our defenders facing the right way for once..... Also you could see the potential benefit of Muric's quick passing out.hoskinsgoalatswansea wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 10:06 pmYou could argue Trafford would’ve got closer to saving some of those goals.

We had a couple of promising positions only to be let down by the final pass.

Re: Everton match thread
But if the gap was insurmountable, then literally every promoted team would go straight back down every year. You are right to point out the huge gap between the leagues, and whilst losing every game really hurts, it’s the way we are getting beaten up so easily that is most concerning.Belgianclaret wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 10:03 pmHow about an unsurmountable gap in class between the championship and the PL ??
I don’t care what tactics or formations you choose, but to be so bad at the basics of effort, fight, set pieces and not giving the bloody ball away in your own half time and again is unacceptable at any level of football, let alone this league!

Re: Everton match thread
The difference in class is obviously huge between the PL and the Champ, but our approach in terms of signing players and the system we've employed was pretty naive. Buy attacking young players, and go at the opposition with one holding midfielder.
It's not even as if the players we bought are bad; Odobert, Koloesho, Ramsey, Tresor, Amdouni etc - All of them I think will go on to good things. But did we need all of them at once? Was getting a bit of experience and/or players that would make us tougher to beat instead a good idea with our budget?
We're in a position where our attacking talent is low on confidence, and our defensive players are left too exposed.

Money probably had its say as well as ambition. I wasn’t never confident with tella coming back despite some fans bowled over by his big beaming smile leading them to believe he wanted to be nowhere else he was like that anyway that was the nature of the lad any lad who just enjoys playing football.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 10:15 pmBy the look of it both players thought they could do better... and have.
Re: Everton match thread
I think we’ll stay up still, short term pain though because it’s pretty awful at the minute. Get our injured players back, a settled side and add a couple of key players in January.
I think Eric Dier and Kalvin Phillips on loan absolutely transforms this side.
The good news is we’ve got a lot of the tough home games out of the way, City Spurs Villa United Chelsea. Plenty of winnable games 2nd half of the season coming up.

I thought he was pony. Gave some very dangerous passes to marked players. Especially in the first half he was a disaster. Second half was ok on the ball yet he let two goals in. Also very hard passing at times on short distances. Bad speed on the ball.
I expected way more from all the hundreds of messages I read that he would be a gamechanger. In fact he was but not in a good way.
Re: Everton match thread
Points from tonights performance:
- It doesn't matter who plays, we play the same and are no better
- We are poor in defence
- We are poor in attack. Our xG was 0.02 in that match. I have never seen a lower score
Daft as it sounds, I don't think the issue is the quality of players. I think it is simply lack of confidence. It can make a massive difference to a team. Just look at United right now, they have quality players but their confidence is shot.
Constantly putting players down here and on social media probably doesn't help improve that.

I've seen a lot of people suggesting that we could solve some of our problems in January but we have to remember how tough winter transfer windows can be if you are struggling. For example, why would Jack Clarke (who are we apparently chasing) leave play-off contenders Sunderland for Burnley who could swap places with them in a few months?

Re: Everton match thread
Christ if only.
I think we'd need to get Ekdal back in the side too though, and ideally Muric IMO.
Plus I'd still be inclined to go Benson right, even if he's frail and one trick he's a goal threat, and we need another reliable one besides Foster.
But I fully agree we need a bit of steel and experienced quality down the spine.

Re: Everton match thread
I agree that confidence is a big factor but I really do think it’s mainly due to the fact we just don’t have players good enough for the rest of the league. You could argue right now that none of our players get in any of the other 19 clubs starting 11. Foster maybe gets into sheff uniteds at a pushSteddyman wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 10:51 pmPoints from tonights performance:

Re: Everton match thread
Watched the whole match and didn’t pick up on this but just seem it on the ITV highlights.
The setup for that vital 2nd goal. That corner we had 4-5 men at the front post marking nobody. Just marking space that nobody ever intended to use. Every Everton player was on the far side of the pitch to McNeil who took the corner and they set up that way, it wasn’t clever movement. The ball came in, it was 4 EFC vs 2 BFC to win a header, plus Cullen was the one marking Tarky. Then, any one of 3-4 players could have tapped it in.
It is probably the worst marking for a corner I have ever seen.

This is the biggest travesty for me - just chucking games away because we are sticking WITH ZONAL ******* MARKING AT CORNERS
It's basic stuff. Every week we look awful at set pieces - just effing change it!

Any one player to transform this team is going to have to be an unholy offspring of Beckenbauer, Pirlo, Netzer and Roy Race.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 9:42 pmWe are doing what we can until Jan as competent full back transforms this team.

Re: Everton match thread
Maybe flattering them was the wrong phrasing (though I was cooking a curry whilst watching so may well have missed a couple of key chances). But I certainly don't think they had to work hard to win 3-0 and don't win anywhere near as handsomely without our poor defending of our six yard box.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 9:48 pmThey should have won by 5/6 tonight if there finishing was better.
Re: Everton match thread
That picture is frightening! You can literally fit a tank through the hole in our defence that has half of Everton’s team in it!!!CoolClaret wrote: ↑Thu Nov 02, 2023 12:32 amThis is the biggest travesty for me - just chucking games away because we are sticking WITH ZONAL ******* MARKING AT CORNERS

Zonal or man marking isn’t the issue I don’t think, it’s just a simple case of wanting to win the ball and attacking it with everything you’ve got to do so! The way teams are finding it so easy to win headers from crosses is incredible at the moment and Everton barely had to lift a finger last night to do so. Embarrassing defending!
Re: Everton match thread
Did the new set piece coach come in at the beginning of the season? because our set piece play wether attacking or defending is atrocious .

Re: Everton match thread
That picture is incredible. There are 7 Everton players in the picture and not one is actually marked tbh. I think that would be quite impossible to repeat even if you tried. It’s like Junior school stuff from our team. I definitely wouldn’t call it zonal, I’d call it clumped together getting in each other’s way.
