Another pub shut its doors, was a brilliant Burnley pub when Dickie had it. Heard Bees Knees are interested in it. They have recently took over the Starkies in Padiham and The Woodtop on Accy Rd.

We’re gunna have none left at this rate.

Work has started to turn the Rose & Crown, Manchester Rd into flats.

I was told there are a couple over your neck of the woods that are perilously close to having to shut. They have struggled over the summer and now with the winter fuel bills they face they are losing hundreds a week.

It's inevitably a case of use em or lose em, because if it was making a do, presumably it'd be staying open.
(Unless there's other factors involved).

Trouble is drinking habits have changed to boozing in the house for a lot of people.

Amazing how many folk you see complaining about pubs shutting but don't use them (not aimed at anyone on this thread) I mentioned previously there was a Facebook post when my local shut about 4-5 years ago and there must have been 200+ comments about what a tragedy it was and how we needed to save the British pub yet looking through the list of people, I didn't recognise any of the people commenting and I was in there 3-4 nights a week.
I have 3 local pubs I use near me including the local cricket club, socially they're great and I have made some good friends over the years.

I probably went in the Angel a handful of times a year, always a pleasant enough crowd, always the same faces as well

Aw man, loved that bar. Always made welcome when I was over.

As someone who drank on Accrington Rd in the 70s and 80s I am amazed how many pubs and clubs have shut in that area, they were always full even through the week.
Padiham Rd and rosegrove were good places to go but they also have lost most of the pubs, don't go out as much now because of the lost pubs and lost mates!
P.s. tap rooms were great for older men to meet, can't think of a decent tap room nowadays!

You do wonder how many will be left in 15/20 years time. When I go out drinking it generally seems that it's an older crowd that is keeping them going as well. The younger generation generally just either can't afford it or aren't interested.

I’d love someone to work out the cost of beer from the 60’s to now in comparison with the living wage. I bet it’s absolutely mental how much it’s gone up.

Last time we went in there we were the only people in. General Williams on the other hand was pretty full.

It depends where you are. In clitheroe a couple of crap pubs have closed but plenty of decent new boozers have opened in the last 3 or 4 years.

The thing is that a lot of small 'locals' pubs were just that. Unwelcoming to outsiders, until it's too late, then they start reaching out for newbies on Facebook. They relied too much on their handful of diehards who went in every day and drank crap keg. When they died off, or became too skint to go there any more, the pubs also died off with them.

The kind of pubs I'm talking about are the ones that were struggling well before our current economic woes. I'll be honest, if I'm paying £4.00 a pint and over, I want a good well-kept beer, not some dross that isn't much better than the cans you get in a box of 10x440ml from the supermarket for a tenner.

The saddest thing is that good pubs, that serve well-kept ales and are a pleasure to drink in, are now being hit hard.

The excellent Bankers Draft micro pub in Barrowford has a good tap-room type feel to it and consistently great beer selection which varies week to week. I live just round the corner and am available for guided tours

Same here in Ireland in my town / village they had 31 pubs at one time now it's down to 5 .

Open a coffee shop and you will make money sad but true .

its partly a lot of pubs own fault, they havent moved with the times. (not particularly talking about the Angel as i havent been for years)

but pubs havent moved with the times, your average consumer doesnt want a pint of carling for £4 anymore or a ripped beer mat. People want more exotic drinks, cocktails, nibbles in a more modern welcoming environment with some choice background music.

theres not many seasoned afterwork drinkers these days to make "boozers" work.

Has anybody heard anything about the Turf pub? I'm guessing it will be a massive job to get it back open.

It's going to be fully renovated according to the owners.

I used to agree but Ive started going in the George IV which is now a brilliant pub, they always have music on and the atmosphere is great, always busy, decent snack food on etc.
I went in Saturday and the speakers temporarily stopped working, it was such a strange atmosphere, I almost left

These are the places that are doing well in the current climate, along with established cask beer pubs. Discerning drinkers don’t necessarily want quantity they want quality and are prepared to pay for it.
I’m lucky here in Shrewsbury with the amount of good pubs and micro pubs literally on my doorstep or a short train journey away.
Having said that you have to consider the demographics of individual areas. I think micro pubs and cask beer pubs are more likely to do well in more affluent areas than deprived working class areas.

Would rather have that than live music.

There's a whole bunch of us "chaps" who regularly go out of town on the train on match days when it's a late (or later) kick off because the selection of excellent (real ale type) pubs at places like Sowerby Bridge or Halifax or Hebden etc. is great. Then we ride back for the match. This Saturday being a "normal" 3.00 k.o.well be in the few good pubs in town from late morning. Those being The Bridge, The Brewm, The Circ/ Electric Circus and The Boot. (And arguably The Loom) But therein lies my point. A town like Halifax has no discernable football related trade yet has about 14 or 15 absolutely excellent pubs to choose from. It's seems strange that Burnley has so few (and in saying that I'm not knocking the ones which are excellent and where people are doing a brilliant job as mentioned above)

I've never got into this place. Plenty of friends go but when I tried it in its early days, I didn't like the noise. It had a tinny echo.
My choice is the Lamb, decent beer at a great price.

The problem with pubs shutting is that some of the undesirable element are driven into respectable clubs, causing problems for long time members. I won’t name my local club, but outsiders use the toilets for things other than natural bodily functions. I’ll say no more.

Background music is fine.......loud (i can't hear myself think) music is not.
Where i live you can't go out anywhere & avoid it, drives me mad.

Well-run pubs will still be around long after we are all gone. Granted, maybe not in the same numbers, but going out for a meal, in a pub that sell decent ale and good food, will always be a thing.

Even my children enjoy a Sunday lunch and afternoon in the local on a Sunday, maybe a game of pool, I cant see that changing anytime soon
