The Pillars of the Earth

My wife is an avid reader and she's trying to convince me to follow her read and take up reading as we have lots of time on our hands,she says Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett is the best book ever written,reading the blurb I'm not that convinced,anyone on here read this and can recommend it,I'm not that convinced at all.

Yes, ive got it.
Its basically about the building of a cathedral in a fictional English city in the 12th century and set against the backdrop of the historical events of the time.
Helps if you like historical fiction and stuff like that.
I found it a really good read , very absorbing.
BTW the tv series was enjoyable as well, i thought.

My friend was found guilty of using too many commas. The judge warned him to expect a really long sentence.

Easily his best book.
Sarum by Edward Rutherford is another good read along similar lines

I'm not a reader at all but just picked up an old penguin book of Animal Farm by George Orwell which was in the hotel foyer in Spain last month. It was only a small thin book with not too many pages so took it to the beach.
I read it for English lit at school 60 years ago and thought it was crap then, mainly because I really couldnt understand it.
What a bloody good book, I couldn't put it down, a real page turner. Get it free on Google play books.
It basically takes the **** out of Stalin and the Communist ideology. The UK government banned it when first published in 1945 as it may offend Russians.
It's a very apt read today, now that Putin has taken Stalin's role.
Not heavy at all, very amusing.

Quite possibly the best book I’ve read. Absolutely gripping from start to finish, and it is epic in scope and character. the follow ups are good, but set in slightly different times and refer back or forward sometimes.A brand new kings bridge novel out now

A good read.
Had it given as a present years ago. Read it a couple of times.
As has been said above, the TV series was good too.
As often the case, the book is better though.

Pillars of the Earth is gripping, fantastic storyline with such varied characters. Follett is up there with Dickens for great tales and characters.

I’m a massive Follett fan, the way he mixes real World events within his novels is fantastic. Pillars of the Earth is the 1st of his Kingsbridge trilogy followed by World Without End and A Column of Fire…highly recommended as are the Century trilogy which features events in the 20th Century

An excellent read,with great characters in.The whole series of these books are some of the best I have read.

Ken Folleet and the best book ever written in the same sentence. I know it's all about opinions, but he's a mass-market, popular writer. Are they ever the best writers? Tell her to read American Tabloid.
