I nipped to the shop with us two nil up after listening to Radio Lancs all game.
I was more than shocked when I got back in and we had lost 3-2.

Purely as a matter of interest.....on 14th November 2023 Darlington lost 8-0 at Chorley in the National League North.

Incredible night (if that’s the right word!)…………after the match, took ages driving back down the A59 in thick freezing fog just to round off a thoroughly miserable evening!

This one of those ‘where were you’ moments. I was at my friends house half-following it on Sky Sports News while we dossed about. By full time, I couldn’t understand what had happened - much to the hilarity of my mates.

Sat at home feeling sorry for myself I could almost sense it coming as I listened to Radio Lancs. We seemed to be under so much pressure but from 2-0 on 81 mins to losing 2-3 is just ridiculous.

Was the first match postponed and Darlington’s ground waterlogged? Was that why it was played at the Riverside?

I remember when we went 2-0 up, I quipped to my friends that the match was going to abandoned because of the fog because we were winning.

I wish had been.

Was also listening to radio lancs at uni in Manchester! You could just sense what was going to happen 2nd half from the commentary!
Not read the report but pretty sure we would have played Man City in the next round??

Draw and how Darlington did in the next round at the link - and it would have been City at home.

The game was bad enough but the journey home was a nightmare, I was stone cold sober and driving.

I was trying to think, why did we play in Middlesbrough - was Feethams flooded or something?

They had major problems with the pitch. I think they might have played the next round at Middlesbrough too.

Forget that - they played City on their home ground at Feethams

Was the original tie postponed though? For some reason, I think I remember knowing we had Man City in the next round. I'm sure it wasn't a replay. I remember it being on a Tuesday or Wednesday night though.

I think it was around that time that Darlo tried to introduce tens of thousands of worms to help drain the pitch.

They all drowned.

As per the articles:

Moved to Middlesbrough because of state of Darlington pitch

Put back three days to allow Cleveland Police to police the game

My first visit to the Riverside and I couldn't believe how small it felt. We were crap.

Thoroughly depressing night.

Overriding memories of trudging through a waste ground to get to the stadium, and the Darlington tannoy announcer shouting ‘COME ON DARLO, MAKE SOME NOISE!!’ non-stop until everyone’s ears were bleeding.

we were in a convoy seemingly following the car in front who was following the car in front etc - for at least 2 minutes all of us were on the wrong side of the road, very scary stuff.

Stan didn’t half moan did he?

Always blaming others after embarrassing defeats.
