Finally shuffled off this mortal coil…. Lived far longer than his lifestyle suggested he would. Enjoyed a Guinness with him in the Vulcan pub many moons ago. How he managed to stand on stage is beyond me…

Well done for failing to keep your thoughts about him to yourself.

Maybe you should familiarise yourself with the phrase "sometimes it better to say nothing".

I can't say I'm a huge Pogues fan but certainly a band I enjoy listening to once in a while.

Had the good fortune to see the Pogues live. Once at Murrayfield, oh my days never had I been to gig like it . Absolute mayhem for about 40 minutes.

RIP Shane Macgowan and thank you for the music.

Saw the pogues at the NEC about 20 years ago and they were brilliant. Shane would play 2 numbers and then go and get another pint . I put him with Mr Dury as my 2 favourite song writers who were both great front men . RIp Shane.

no need for a negative comment on this sort of thread. You're a bum, you're a punk, you're an old slut on junk

I saw The Pogues perform in London pubs 5 or 6 times when I lived in London in the early to mid-80’s. They were the support act for my friend’s female rockabilly group The Shillelagh Sisters.

His drinking exploits tended to overshadow things, but some of the Pogues' earlier albums really hold up well, particularly Rum, Sodomy and the Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace with God. RIP

Very sad, but not unexpected news today…one of the greatest songwriters of his generation…for singalong, pantswinging, drunken debauchery he was an absolute master “and he took the road to heaven in the morning” rip Shane

Sad but somewhat inevitable . He certainly lived his life his own way.

While I like Fairytale the Pogues are / were so much more than that song.

I once had the pleasure of his company for a while in his local, Filthy McNasty's in Islington, my mate was a big fan and so as he lived in London we decided on the off chance to give his boozer a visit.

He was propping up the bar so we decided to have a chat, what a top man, who put up with 5 herberts asking him about all things Pogues/music biz.

I offered to buy him a drink which he accepted, it was a double martini and cider. He only left the conversation when his wife dragged him off into a taxi.

Songs like Rainy Night in Soho and Broad Majestic Shannon were absolutely top class, RIP Shane.

Just been listening to a few Pogues/MacGowan songs and found there is a Claret's connection. Whilst Sinatra gets a namecheck on FTofNY non other than Robbie Brady gets a mention on Shane's Je T'aime Ireland!

If the above link doesn't work someone might be kind enough to do the honours.
