If Villa beat Sheffield utd tonight i think that they will top the Premier league maybe for the first time since the old First Division when they won it at Arsenal on the last game of the season maybe late 70s of top of my head without looking it up , would be great if they can keep there till end of the season and i think they are going for a record 18th win on the trot..

I fancied them for top four before the season started. They’ve been terrific so far…. Apart from losing at Nottingham Forest

If Villa win tonight by 4 goals or more followed tomorrow by a draw between Liverpool and Arsenal then Villa will top the PL at Xmas. So I have read somewhere.
Massive odds against that happening at the start of the season.

Hope they win the league tbh, will be a welcome change!

I reckon they must have topped the old first division in the late 80's when Platt was playing for them because for a couple of seasons they were probably the 3rd best team after Arsenal and Liverpool.
As a kid I went on a New Years day game at Villa Park against Arsenal when they were both 1st and 2nd in the league

Was that in the away end when they were playing Leeds by any chance?

They finished 2nd on two occasions in 1990 and 1993. They were top of the table at the beginning of March 1993, but had played a game more than Man United at the time.
This is the best side they’ve had since then in my opinion, even though they’ve had some cracking players in that time.

They won the league in 1980-1981 when Ron Saunders was manager..

Whilst I agree somewhat, winning the PL does strange things to people…. You’ve only got to experience Leicester fans for five minutes to know that….

Aston Villa, V Sheffield United… and just think how fortunes would, and should have been altered, had this perfectly legitimate goal been awarded during project restart.

Fascinating club. Always wondered why they were named after a hotel… then research revealed the club was formed at the Methodist Church that faced that grand hotel. The main reason the West Midlands became involved with the Lancashire FA forming the football league.

It was the 89/90 season I was thinking of and it was 30th Dec game I must have gone on when Villa won 2-1. It looks like they were 2nd and 3rd not 1st and 2nd with Liverpool several points clear

I think I must have seen them play Man U at Old Trafford towards the end of the same season. United won which I think ended their chance if winning the league.
I think United fans were unhappy they'd won as it handed the title to Liverpool.

Just hoping they don't stuff us next week . I'm going with my mate on the train who's a villa fan . Few beers first , then he'll go in the trinity stand whilst I'll be in our end . He'll be unbearable on the way back if they give us a good hammering.

You are right and looks like they spent pretty much the whole first half of that season top of the league

Yes, they made a fantastic start under John Gregory who was playing with Brian Little's side. Gregory was a tiresome Coyle-type figure and soon got found out.
He spent most of November and December talking about how he wouldn't be talking about winning the league.
Fortunately for him, they finished sixth and he didn't have to talk about it much longer at all.

Always had a soft spot for them after watching Tony Morley almost single handedly win the European Cup for them in the 80's.
What a winger that guy was.

Happy for Emery who’s a top manager and was ridiculed by the media during his time at Arsenal because of his attempt at speaking English.
Harshly sacked too, they bottled top four near the end and lost to Chelsea in the European final but then Arteta came in and had them finish 8th back to back which showed Emery over achieved imo

VAR again - it's as much a penalty as it is a foul on the goalkeeper.

What a joke. The play had moved on from that foul on the keeper. Sheffield had plenty of chance to clear it.

The play was a result of the foul
Doesn't matter how long went on after, it wouldn't have happened like that otherwise.
..or do we now constantly foul keepers in the hope the ball stays in olay for another 5 seconds and you score a goal?

Solid defensive display by Sheffield United so far. Villa have hardly bothered the keeper.

Definitely thought the last one was handball - literally moved his arm to scoop the ball away. I think Sheffield have been might lucky tonight.

I'd be tempted to say that VAR must have a few quid on Sheff U - some really strange decisions going on here - but it's par for the course this season.

Really can’t understand how you can give a foul for a slight infringement on the goalkeeper when the bloke fouling is having h his shirt ripped off by another player. There also another blatant foul taking place in the middle of the area.

Wilder has got the Blades fighting - lacking quality but look like they’ll at least go down swinging.
Archer looks pretty decent; could’ve done with him over Ramsey.
