Where did it all go wrong?
The Championship team from last year is better than the current iteration, as I suspected.
That side last year would be 14-15th and staying up, playing very good football. Mistakes were made buying a bunch of young, inexperienced, midgets.

No it wouldn't. It would be about where we are.

Based on what we’ve seen from Cullen, Roberts and Al Dakhil this season I suspect it wouldn’t be better.

Higher if we'd signed Tella and THB plus experience.

And Barnes up front would have been in double figures by now.

Re: Where did it all go wrong?
Not convinced by either. THB is in the championship and probably doing as well as last year (nobody in the prem fancied a punt on the England U21 Captain - hardly an unknown) and Tella didn't do much last time he was in the prem.
No guarantees either way but I think they wouldn't have made a significant difference.

Where did it all go wrong
It was when we sold Jimmy McIlroy.
We've never recovered.

But we played really well today. Scored two good goals, that might well have been three. And a fair time with only ten men. Could well have snatched it but unfortunately succumbed to a soft penalty.

Well, the Goalkeeper is good now, the defence isn't, we've not been scoring enough. IJimmyRobbo wrote: ↑Sat Dec 30, 2023 10:49 pmNot convinced by either. Aye, Maarten (5’6”) and Tella (5’8”) with their bags of Premier League experience could have been the giants that made the difference.BurnleySteve_ wrote: ↑Sat Dec 30, 2023 10:41 pmThe Championship team from last year is better than the current iteration, as I suspected.

I think if we would have had Foster firing on all cylinders from the start of the season we would have had another 6 points minimum ,and VK had us playing slightly more direct like we’re doing now we would be half way up the league.

Re: Where did it all go wrong?
In SD's first season in the PL we were totally outplayedin most games, and got some thumpings, but still got around 30 points and went down. Sine the Arsenal game the games have been generally closer but mistakes in just about all games have led to losses. I agree with above from Westleigh-Foster could easily have got us 5 goals/assists during his absence. Combine that to poor VAR judgements and we could easily be on 16/17 points. Sadly we only have a handful of players who can hurt teams-Foster, Odobert, Amdouini, Berge and Koleosho when fit

Re: Where did it all go wrong?
I get there is bigger picture stuff going on and the club is not a total shambles in any way, but mistakes have been made and we are paying for it on the pitch. We have less points that Sheff United who sold their two best players from last season and we bought one of them

This is the same Tella that hasn’t broken in to a Bundesliga side (much lower quality than the Prem) and THB who didn’t get another Prem offer?
Not sure about that.

This team is now better than last seasons. Its taken a while but theyve learnt about how hard you have to work at this level to stay in games.

I'm saying the team had an overall cohesion, from playing 46 games together. That was ripped up with 4-5 starters all left at once.
Would have been better off keeping a side who know each other, inside and out

To be fair, there were a hell of a lot of people questioning the transfer window.
The last day of the transfer window is littered with posts about not signing a LB, CM would result in a poor season.
Just go back and have a look

That’s usually the case and I’m only avoiding that line of thought because I’m liking the turnaround in performances and have decided to believe Kompany can pull this offWokingclaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 30, 2023 11:15 pmOf course, but we had gone too young. You can't do that and survive in this league.

He hasn't fully broken into the team top of the Bundesliga, level on points with Bayern Munich.
I think we can be confident that Bayer Leverkusen are a bit higher quality than Burnley.

Go on what “experience” could we have signed?
Good premier league experienced players cost more than Burnley can afford.
Tella is ripping up trees in Germany
Harwood-Bellis I did think we’d sign but if City only wanted to loan him I can see why we bought others instead.

Re: Where did it all go wrong?
Correct but the Bundesliga isn’t higher quality than tge Prem, which is my point. We have no evidence base to suggest he’d be making a big difference for us this season.quoonbeatz wrote: ↑Sat Dec 30, 2023 11:52 pmHe hasn't fully broken into the team top of the Bundesliga, level on points with Bayern Munich.

Worth noting a lot of his goals last season came against lower sides when he notched a few, he didn’t do much vs the top sides.
Don’t get me wrong, of the ones we had on loan last year he’s the one I’d most like to have back, I just don’t think he’d have made a massive difference to where we are now.

Re: Where did it all go wrong?
Think we’d have faired better with less turnover to start the season and are massively missing a player like Tella making runs in behind off the right and a player of Maatsens passing ability from fullback and dare I say Muric’s at goalkeeper (though Traff is well suited and has been playing really well in the current style of play )
We are now starting to click - the only problem being we’re now running out of games….
I’m just happy that the lads have finally started to pull together as a team and look like a cohesive unit. We looked like a team of individuals earlier in the season… far from it now.

We have spent £100 mill you know and our return so far, is the worst we've had at this level.

As have posted in other posts, we have no evidence base he’d be any better because he has neither done it in the Bundesliga or got a look in at Soton when they were in the Prem.
Will be interesting how some of the players you feel we have signed who are not as good as Tella get on next season in the Champ as I think that might change a few opinions. In any event, we didn’t sign a single player who cost the €23m that BL paid for Tella so out of our price range.

The QPR defeat and Rotherham draw came with a more rotated side after we had just piss3d the league.
At our best in sort of Jan-March we were steam rolling everybody.

That he isn't getting many minutes for the team at the top of that league doesn't make your point though. If he was playing regularly not really contributing, you might have some evidence.

He played in the PL at a young age for Southampton though and never really had an extended run in the side.NewClaret wrote: ↑Sun Dec 31, 2023 12:08 amWhich ones out of interest?

It’s like saying Odobert isn’t up to it because he only got 4 goals for Troyes in Ligue Un.
He had a break out season with us and was instrumental to our success - led the press incredibly well and gave us an in behind threat if teams tried to press us higher up the pitch.
It was just a good fit - we’re desperately missing him on the right.
That isn’t a slight at some of the young lads we’ve signed btw, just is what it is. I think Tella would have gotten 5-10 goals for us this season no problem.
