The Midas Touch

Post by Devils_Advocate » Wed Jan 10, 2024 8:26 pm

Managed to get my hands on a genuine Olympic gold medal today and although that kind of thing doesn't really bother me it did feel a little special to have it in my hands. Got me wondering what famous sporting trophy's and medals have other posters might have gotten hold of?

Hospital Cup is a superb trophy too.

I went to a dinner in 1985 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of being champions in 1960. The trophy was there and I had the opportunity to lift it.

Aye it’s a heavy old thing too is the Hospital Cup.
The year after I played in final there was some kind of local league dispute and for one single year it was the Hospice Cup before returning to the Hospital Cup.
We got beat in the semi finals on penalties that year but the final was not on the Turf because of the dispute.

Can’t remember the exact years - I’ve got the final programme somewhere.

I've had hold of a gold and silver Olympic medals and I've also had hold of all 3 types of World championship medals.
The friend of mine who won these and more is very blasé about there existence and had to dig them out of a box in the loft

This is a much younger version of myself 30 years ago holding the ball from the 1938 Scottish FA Cup final. I was working at a museum in Methil and we did an exhibition on the history of East Fife who are still the only 2nd Division team that ever won the Scottish Cup.

That’s the Cup in the display case. I had to insure it for £5 million, hire professional security guards, and take it to the local police station every night to be kept in their safe. One morning I showed up at the station to collect the trophy and the police arrested my security guards for possession of a stolen vehicle! True story!! (I had not hired the most expensive company…). Long story short I ended up personally carrying the Scottish FA cup from the police station to the museum, it was about a two mile walk.

Since coming to the states I’ve held the Lombardi trophy and worn a SuperBowl ring.

I held the First Division trophy at Turf Moor not long after we won it in 2015-2016.
