Throw ins

Post by Burnley1989 » Sat Feb 03, 2024 6:51 pm

Can you ever remember a Burnley side as poor with a throw in, nobody wants it, we take 20 seconds and throw it straight to the opposition, it’s bizarre

Had to have a laugh when our fans were moaning about Fulham wasting time at throw ins and they weren't taking as long as ours.

The throw ins are infuriating.

Up there alongside the defensive coach (I assume that is what he is) who jumps up each time the opposition has a corner.

I haven’t a clue what he is doing or saying. Whatever it is, it doesn’t seem to make a blind bit of difference - our ‘marking’ at corners is terrible.

Every other teams throws it easily to one of their players. We NEVER find a Burnley shirt with throw ins. Ever!! It really is a standing joke!!!

Pisses me off no end when it gets thrown in hard at the ground and bounces up a couple of yards away from its intended target’s feet. It makes it much more difficult to get under control. Proper basic stuff.

Either throw it over the top or make sure it goes straight to feet.

I particularly enjoyed Massengo home debuting with a foul throw. The lad didn’t mess around. He took the ball with so much authority too.

We've been terrible at them for as long as I can remember, no matter who is in charge or what division we're in, all the way back to the 90's.
Maybe we've been generally good enough over the last 30 years to let bad throw-ins go under the radar, but aside from Chris Eagles throwing to Kev McDonald against Arsenal in 2008, I can't remember a throw in leading to a goal in all that time.

I will say in his defence that imo the majority of thows by any team at the Turf are generally foul throws if the rules were correctly applied.

It’s got to the point that it probably would benefit us to let the other team take our throw ins. In fact all our set pieces.

What about defending corners? In the second half we had 5 players stood at the front post marking 0 Fulham players whilst 5 of there players stood towards the far side with Vitinho trying to stop a 6 foot plus centre half

Are we going to talk about the one Brownhill did in the second half which sent their guy through on goal? Berge did well to cover that horrendous error.

That Brownhill throw nearly sent me over the edge.

There was so many misplaced passes as well, also a throw/roll out from the keeper that went straight to Fulham .

Could this be the players too anxious at times? To anxious to play the way the manager seemingly wants rather than using a bit of nouse? Some of the stuff yesterday was unbelievably bad .

There has to be a tune up in intensity and aggression

Set pieces, throw ins and when the defender has time on the ball to pick a pass, all have one thing in common. No movement. We are almost always completely static and so easy to mark and read. Makes us very easy to play against in those scenarios.

I think Vitinho just might be the worst player ever at Burnley at taking throw ins. Deliberates for what seems like an eternity and then just throws it to an opposition player. There doesn’t seem to be much a plan from throw ins. Trippier used to be very good at them.

Vitinho takes a run up as though he’s going to throw like Rory Delap used to do for Stoke. He takes a long run up, but then rather than drag a foot to make sure his body is still moving forward he stops with two feet together, negating the need to have made the run up at all. It’s weird to watch.

The reason why he was so good at throw ins was because he threw the ball to a good area for the receiver, i.e. not at someone’s mid drift or at their neck, and then he had a plan of what he was going to do with the ball before he even received it back. A regular move of his was when someone cushioned it back to him and he then whipped a ball across to the centre half or back to the keeper.

Sounds simple.

Actually, it is simple.

We’ve been crap at throw ins for pretty much all my time supporting Burnley, but I actually thought last season we were good at them. We often threw a risky ball into midfield for someone to run on to. I can understand why we don’t take those risks this season but there is a distinct lack of movement. Under Dyche players often set up in a defensive position ready to lose possession and weren’t even allowed to come and show for the ball.

Nobody shows for the ball, that's what happens with a team lacking confidence.
It's where a good captain/leader earns his coin. He'd be barking out instructions to the younger lads and geeing them up.
We have quite a few problems, but there's no getting away from the same root cause of most of them.

We take to long with them, we give the opposition time to mark everyone and this leaves us no options.
To me it’s like all our game we tend to stroll around as if we have all the time in the world even when we are 2-0 down🤷‍♂️

Could be quite effective in getting you further up the pitch or feeding off the scraps. Anything is better than what we are currently achieving from throw ins.

Been avoiding this thread for mental health reasons, because…

There is nothing that’s annoyed me more this season than watching our utter ineptitude at throw ins.

I cannot work it out. It’s the absolute basics. For our own throw ins we get over to them so slowly that everyone is marked. We never try & take a quick one. Then nobody offers any movement and we concede possession. Sometimes we throw it directly to them (Brownhill).

I can only imagine that the plan is to bore the ref so much with our fake thow ins that he allows us to claim 15 yards creeping up the line.

I’m honestly hoping the refs start issuing us yellows for time wasting until the coaching staff wake up and sort it.

Then for theirs we don’t mark and allow an easy throw to their player in space.

I’d like to see lots of improvements before the end of the season but learning to take throw ins is my top ask. Then corners/set pieces like Everton.

It's all very well doing neat flicks and tricks and trying to retain possession by stroking it around at the back. But if you can't do the basics- ie show for throw ins or take corners, then you have to question what the point is. There's zero evidence that we take set pieces seriously in training at the moment.

Nothing wrong with that type of throw. It turns the opposition round and gets them facing their own goal. Onus is then on them to respond to it. Now they get it at their feet and set up a move forwards.

It’s funny you should say that. At one point yesterday Ramsay was just going through the motions and not showing for the ball. I said to my son in law that he should be getting out wide and screaming for the ball and getting chalk on his boots. Sadly this was never going to happen.
