Just listening to this on the news, real shock, like people saying, listened to him all the time in Eighties.

RIP Steve.

Sad to hear. Very good DJ in his day. Very entertaining was his Radio 1 afternoon show, with his “posse”.
RIP Steve.

Gobsmacked by the news like many of us he was there through our lives. Always funny sometimes corny but truly knowledgeable and affable.

Just heard.

Steve Wright started on Radio 220 Thames Valley in the mid seventies. One of the new 'local radio stations, based in Reading.

Also there was Mike Read. Both went on to Radio one.
They did their own show but then had the wheeze of doing one together - Read & Wright the wireless people.

I broke my leg badly back then (knocked off motorbike), so had the pleasure of their company, whilst at home recovering.

Thanks Steve.

Very sad to hear that. We’d tune in to pick of the pops on Saturday afternoons trying to guess the year before he said it.
TOTP and his Radio 1 show was part of my youth too. RIP Steve.

This is very very sudden so I presume a heart attack, he'd just finish the other day a pre recording for a valentine day's love songs special for tommrow.

Used to love his show way back. Getting into my mother’s car after school or college and hearing possibly the best jingle ever written for radio.

Here is the making of it:

I’ve watched it dozens of times over the years and as a trumpet player, I appreciate the final few notes!

RIP

Rumour is bacterial meningitis but I don't know how accurate that is.

Steve Wright Saturday mornings followed by Adrian Juste in the afternoon were a big part of my pre match routine in the early 80s.

Certainly a shock to hear this sad news.
Was a part of the furniture, so to speak, on Sunday morning.
Will be sadly missed.

Brilliant and very funny trailblazer dj back in the day . Steve Wright and the afternoon boys was a joy with all the characters like Mr Angry , the geese , the dogs etc . Used to listen after school then through the 90’s etc when he toned down a bit but still enjoyable stuff .

Always seemed a likeable chap… at his best when he was giving the likes of depeche mode pelters in the 80’s. Big fan of ask Elvis too…

RIP Wrighty…

There is/ was a strong 'anti Steve Wright' contingent airing their views on social media outlets for a number of years. Never understood it myself since they had the option to switch off or find an alternative station. Wonder how they feel now?

It was trendy to diss him as corny! But they didn’t understand his deep knowledge of all sorts of music.

I’d imagine they’d feel the same…. And why wouldn’t they? And it’s ok for them to do so.

His 'Afternoon' shows were almost a daily part of my life in the late 70s/80s.

Yes a shock. However I thought he never cared that much about the music on his daily show, as someone says further up liked to talk over a record, and rarely told you what the tune was and who it was by. And the serious jockin? I like serious DJs, like the ones who really care about the music and can enrich and inform. Sorry!!!

Played a lot of cheese but would drop some absolute gems from time to time and put me on to some brilliant obscure b sides from earth wind and fire and thin Lizzy . A great broadcaster

A friend who worked for Capital Radio got me a tour around Egton House where Radio 1 was broadcast from in the early 90’s. Steve Wright’s show was on. I was amazed to see him in the studio on his own, there were dozens of cassettes and typed up paper all over the desk.

RIP, happy memories of his afternoon all those years ago. Not sure though why it was the headline news on the BBC at 6pm considering what's going on in the world and the UK.

I liked how he made his celebrity guests feel relaxed so they would open up and tell stories they hadn’t told before.

Clearly a guy who just loved radio and people (famous or just people in the street).

It's sad to hear of the death of Steve Wright, I feel it would be fitting if someone spoke loudly over the the 1st thirty seconds and then the last 30 seconds of the vicars eulogy and someone else from the congregation hummed annoyingly out of tune at his funeral

RIP x

I get your point, weller, I found the bloke annoying and didn't share his sense of humour at all.
Nevertheless, I have great respect for the contribution he made to the radio and music industries.

Funny back in the day but could not believe he was still using the same material and style for so long. Obviously had a loyal following as you don’t keep your job for so long if people aren’t listening.
He was replaced by someone a lot more annoying.

Sounds like he had a tough time when his wife left him. He put quite a lot of weight on in his latter years.

Read yesterday that his dad his still alive - always sad for parents to lose a son or daughter however old they are.

Shares his name with a very funny dead pan American stand up comedian from the 90s (??). Whatever happened to him ?

RIP

"I intend to live forever. So far, so good." Love him. I think he's technically retired but sometimes pops up on the late night American talk shows like Stephen Colbert. He did release a novel last year.

His style was quite annoying and he did quite like the sound of his own voice over the listener getting to hear the whole song uninterrupted.

I find it strange that a few people want to criticise someone who has just died. Sometimes, if you have nothing good to say in these moments then it is better to say nothing at all :D

RIP Steve Wright, lived his life doing something that he loved.

Used to love the Mr Spoons song, still remember it word for word:
Diamond geezer, get serious, talk about a guy that makes you delirious.
The man on the bus with the vacant stare, tap him on the forehead, there's nothing there.
He's in sane, he's no cool cat, is he a Yankee, no he's a prat.
Mr spoons, Mr spoons!

Steve Wright was at his peak on R1 in the afternoon, absolutely brilliant.
