India v England 3rd test

1 change for England Wood in for Bashir.

Listening to some comments about the wicket and scores from a couple of tests played here makes 17/2 for the draw tempting while accepting with the approach to the game under Stokes a draw seems unlikely.

England made 537 then India made 488. Then they played the West Indies at the same ground and made 649.

That will be England 43/4 then after an hour.

I was hoping Robinson might get the seamers spot.

Just has that ability to take the ball away from left handers, which could be crucial.

Don't have BT so can't watch but just read that we start the innings on 5 runs due to penalty runs for running on the wicket.

Has this always been a rule ?

Not sure how long this has applied but it is certainly part of the ICC playing conditions. Pretty blatant by India, Ashington in particular.

After 35 Eng 207-2 and India 123-3.

England rate increases through the day whilst India was down.

A great hundred by Duckett.

That scoring rate is insane. It puts the pressure right back on to India after they looked in control with 445.

Hopefully Root can get a score and get us a lead.

I'm loving watch England cricket at the moment, despite the early alarm clock calls. Win, lose or (never) draw its a delight to watch and you can't take your eyes off it.

Seems to be a growing rumour that Stokes will allow them to make a like for like substitute and Washington Sundar will play.

If this is the case, would show class from Stokes. Not aware of nature of the 'family emergency' but he wouldn't want to win a test under these circumstances. Top man.

Well, they didn't do it and it doesn't look like India need another bowler - Root and Bairstow gone. 226-4.

Whilst you know that the English are capable of taking a game away from you in a session, you also know you’re only one session away from a collapse with this style of cricket, once a few wickets tumble.
Not that I’m complaining, it’s been a great few days cricket so far

There's times for "bazball" and there's times for proper test cricket to build an innings - message to Joe Root .

The collapsing is nothing to do with the style we were always 1 session away from collapsing before McCullum and Stokes.

They have just said Joe Root had bowled more overs (89) than runs he had scored in the series.

Bonkers.

Not like Jonny Bairstow to get a duck/low score when we need an innings from him is it?...

Would be his last series for me. Time to keep Foakes and blood another young batter in.

Another young 'un to slowly bed in them squad.

Just bored of Bairstow.

But for Root’s dreadful shot Bairstow would not have been in when India’s bowlers and crowd were boyant on their prized scalp

Just fear if England are set 500 to win in 4 and 1/2 sessions they would sooner be all out for 250 in only 40 overs than be 320 for 8 in 150 overs and match drawn

They’ve been pretty unequivocal about their process. They’d go for the runs.

England would typically be 3-0 down at this stage, on this tour they've just had their first really bad day and will likely fall to 2-1. Fussing over the way they play is silly when it's very clear that playing the traditional way would be outright worse.

How’s their record been? Under this no idea how to play test cricket theory?

Their problem is they pick a small number of players who are not good enough…. Namely Bairstow.

Our aggressive nature is the thing that gave us a slither of a chance to get back into it after India's first innings score.

It's nothing to do with the style of play at all. We're performing well with this approach.

I think we have to mix the bash style of play with some periods of defensive play .
England a bit like The Clarets who keep playing out from the back all the time and concede goals for fun , instead of sometimes just giving it a big boot to clear the danger
