Well said Sir,absolutely spot on about these refs and what they think of smaller clubs.. I'm sure there's a conspiracy against smaller clubs..

Yes I agree, he is a nice guy. I know him to talk to locally, wouldn’t class him as a friend, don’t know him very well, but I know people who do and they praise him. He’s a bit direct, which is a good thing in this industry.
I have no doubt he is correct about some of these refs (some). I have been accusing some of subconscious bias all season but there is another form of bias, what I call career progression bias. Whichever way you like at it the likes of us and the Blades (and Luton) get shafted.

It’s to be hoped he didn’t have the same opinion as Ahmedhodzic who didn’t think Mason Holgate deserved a red against Brighton.

The only thing I find odd about all this is how do you define a ‘small club’? Is a big club one with a large fan base? A billionaire owner? One that’s won lots of trophies? How many big clubs do we have in this country? Six? Ten? Twenty?
I’m only asking this because I have never considered Sheffield Utd a small club. Or Wolves, or Leeds, or WBA or any number of clubs far bigger than Burnley. Is Wilder really referring to the City’s, Liverpool’s and Arsenal’s as ‘big’ clubs?
Just wondering.

Re the sandwich comment… I totally agree with Wilder. How long does it take to meet the manager… would you take a sandwich to a business meeting with a client or supplier and start eating while discussing projects (outside of a business lunch). It is completely unprofessional and disrespectful, he could /should have waited half an hour until he returned to the referees room. It may be old fashioned, but I think it should certainly be called out as such.

The conversation was in the referee's office wasn't it? Going into the ref's office, most likely totally unannounced, at the end of a physically exerting game for both players and officials, is nothing like a planned business meeting with a supplier.

The comments about the sandwich were completely embarrassing.
The way he spoke about himself was so arrogant.
Knowing that it was very unlikely that the referee could defend himself with his side of the story was also no doubt in the mind of Wilder when making these stupid comments.

If the manager of another company comes into a communal office and and one of my employees kept on eating their lunch in the communal office my visitor might not blast the sandwich eater, but I sure as hell would.
The linesman has run up and down the line for 100minutes with a ten minutes rest break… if he needs sustenance so badly he should be seeking medical health and give up the job. How long does a ranting manager stay…. Ten minutes max.

If a manager burst into my office, being pretty obnoxious and ranting, I'm going to carry on eating my sandwich, and I wouldn't stop my assistant doing either. Bearing in mind they've probably had no real proper sustenance for hours, including a good while before the game. We don't know the exact details of what happened, but it doesn't sound like a pre-arranged, cordial chat. So what if he's only ranted for ten minutes, being a big shot Premier League manager doesn't give you carte blanche to just go off on one. If anything, acceptance of this behaviour is a bigger problem than the unwritten rules of respect that you shouldn't be eating food when a person wants to have a go at you.

If my customer thinks I’ve let him down it is better I deal with it sensitively, not throw fuel on the fire. I have to work with them again, why foster ill feeling by being ignorant…. Let them blast and then calm them down…. Long term/ public issue avoided.
The linesman is the equivalent of an assistant manager eating a sandwich when the head of Rover group walked into my office… if he wants to rant I don’t care if he’s justified in his action right then… that is to be established later. You treat them with the respect their position demands.

I don’t think many of us have not gone over the top when we’ve been having a rant about something. Some of the best people I know in their fields talk utter ball cocks at times of high stress /jinks. I like it, it shows there is a real passion there, and demonstrates how much it hurts…

I don’t think it is pedantic or irrelevant. The referee’s assistant doesn’t work for Chris Wilder. They are equals. If he’s eating a sandwich when Wilder walks into a room he shouldn’t be expected to put it to the side until Wilder says he can continue to eat it. Massive sense of entitlement from Wilder.

The attitude that a linesman and manager of a club are equals is exactly the kind of thinking that has ruined the game.

In what way? The officials actually have authority over the manager so no idea where you’re getting this idea from.

Struggling to remember if the Respect campaign tries to teach everyone involved in football that they should respect officials or if it tries to remind officials that managers are their betters and they should grovel before them.

I’d say well done to the liner for not chinning the odious windbag that is Chris Wilder ,with his ludicrous ref conspiracy theories . The treatment refs receive is atrocious ,as the tech has now made “everyone an expert ref” It doesn’t matter which ref is in charge, human error and judgement will always be about 10-15% subjective over a game .

You would have been fired before it ever came to that. There was no food allowed in the building. Respect is not about authority… respect is about decency, and accepting that sometimes maybe someone else may be right; especially when they have spent their lives gaining the knowledge to do their jobs effectively… and I’m a linesman who does not even have to make a decision whether to put my flag up to make my living.

You're having a bit of a nightmare trying to defend him. Looking very stupid yourself, at least he can put being a nob down to the pressures of getting beat every week.
If he apologised for the sandwich comment, people might listen to his rants about decisions.

I agree you would hope Wilder would publicly apologise for his over reaction, when he calmed down… as he made public his outburst in the first place…(and yes I’d expect it to have been done quietly and in private by now). That is a different argument… than the one I was answering. I think it is a language thing that has got a few here jumping down my throat. My training is to approach arguments with an open mind and to seek truths, not just accepted truth. I was pointing out that Wilder’s truth is very different than the truths expressed on this board. I have no real axe to grind about Wilder in particular either way… (and agree with you). As a postmodern M-Res graduate I would have been disappointed had I not been able to make a defence for Wilder as each individual will have their own truth about the episode… none of which should be ignored.
It makes me smile that so many are defending the linesman’s actions because it was Wilder… wonder if they will be so pro authority when it concerns something involving us at Burnley; but that is and would be another ‘truth’.
