Re: Folk singers.
Vin Garbutt sadly died.
We saw him perform about a month before he did die a real shock although his tales of his heart problems were made of ledgens.

Re: Folk singers.
I do, but not for his singing ... a fine Prop forward for Calder Vale RUFC ( now Burnley RUFC ) back in the day, played against him many times .. and on this occasion, in 1991, with him for the Anti-Assassins Club. An 18 year old Will Greenwood ( England World Cup winner 2003 ) is 2nd left on the back row .... Roger, on the back row far right in the red shirt !

We first saw Grace Petrie at Sidmouth about 4 years ago introduced by Atilla the Stockbroker and will see her again this Friday at the Phoenix in Exeter. Is she folk well if folk music is about protest then she certainly is.

Loudon Wainwright 111 with his Social Studies LP.

I personally think this is one of his best LPs so far.

Re: Folk singers.
Loudon has done some great songs over the years, many very tongue in cheek. For anybody into folk music, there's an excellent BBC concert (nicely filmed/ good sound) on You Tube with him + the wonderful Richard Thompson + the very good Suzanne Vega - recorded live at Bush Hall (just round the corner from the away end at QPR). Terrific set of songs from all three (different personalities all v talented). I come back to this many times over the years.South West Claret. wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 9:40 amLoudon Wainwright 111 with his Social Studies LP.

There's a brief intro but the songs start about 45 seconds in.

What's that small screen at the end of the neck of Thompson's guitar that flashes red or green - e.g. at 27.12 it has a red 'E'. Something that shows the key he is in perhaps but it keeps changing during a single song?

Re: Folk singers.
That's just his clip-on tuner so he can keep each string in tune during the performance. As the humidity/temperature changes during the show, they'll need retuning. If you leave them switched on whilst playing, they flash all sorts of messages as the chords played change, should really flick it off when not in use - save the batteries.

Jimmie Spheeris. Sadly died very young. Killed on his motorcycle by a drunk van driver in 1984. This is a lovely song from 1972.
