I know a couple of people who when they get up to sing, you hear the crowd say "oh folk". Or that's what it sounds like......

An MP once famously said his idea of hell was" three folk singers in a pub near Wells!" Not a view I share. What do bloody MPs know!

George Galloway is the exception so don’t tar everyone with the same brush in my view another fine example again in my view is Caroline Lewis of Brighton.

And don't forget -how many folk singers does it take to change a light bulb?
Four - one to change the bulb, and three to sing about how good the old bulb was.

Poor old Steve Earle. I saw him at Cambridge Folk Festival and people said he wasn't Folk.
He played at Nashville and people said he wasn't Country.

Re: Folk singers.
Followed her music for a long time, quite a breadth ranging from very old English/Italian/French songs (great version of Aupre de ma blonde) through the folk rock album with Decemberists. Finally got to see her for 1st time at Bush Hall a couple of years ago; it was my first trip to Bush Hall too though I've passed it umpteen times going to the away end at Loftus Road just round the corner.

Re: Folk singers.
The Irish group Lankum have become v popular over the last 5 years or so, nowadays doing a lot of traditional songs from left field/with a lot of drone.
Some great stuff but I love the more folky stuff-especially when it gives their female singer a chance to air her wonderful voice. Love this version of the old southern English song I first heard a very long time ago from Shirley Collins. Song starts c 50 seconds in.

A member of The Pendlefolk, most famous (I think) for the song "Old Pendle, Old Pendle".

Re: Folk singers.
On Heron, not mentioned in that documentary, was the fact that when they recorded their original album outside the mics didn't pick up the outside sounds, like bird singing, therefore they had to record that separately and add it on in the studio! I think I read that on the CD notes.
Re: Folk singers.
Not really sure whether Sufjan Stevens fits into the Folk category but he has a superb, gentle voice and whilst it's not joyful listening, this song is so meaningful.

June Tabor with a haunting version of the band played Waltzing Matilda by Eric Bogle. My favourite version of a superb song about the horrors of war.

Big fan of Show of Hands. Although I think Arrogance Ignorance & Greed might be their most pointed/best song.LincsWoldsClaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2024 4:18 pmLater used as a lyric in "Roots" by Show of Hands (cracking song by the way).
I love folk music in general, go to folk gigs/festivals pretty regularly, so may as well throw out a few artists I like that haven't been mentioned yet for anyone who might not know them:
Martin Simpson mostly does covers or traditional arrangements but he's worth a listen.
Steve Tilston has a few songs I like, his 2016 album Truth To Tell is pretty good.
Bellowhead are good, John Boden has some good solo work independent of them.
Oysterband have quite a few tracks I like although if you're purists they're more folk rock.
Quite rate Gavin Davenport too, he's not very well known and hasn't recorded anything in a long while but for me deserves more acclaim. British Man Of War, False Knight, and Wooden Swords & May Queens are probably my 3 favourite songs of his.
For younger acts, I saw a trio called Granny's Attic a few years back when they looked like they were all still in school/6th form but already doing festivals (albeit the smaller tents), I can see them being very big on the scene if they keep at it.
But the guy I always recommend is Martyn Joseph. He's sometimes been called the Welsh Springsteen which I'm not sure is right, he does have a few heartland/folk-rock type numbers but he's definitely more on the folk end than Springsteen or indeed Mellencamp. Has a few Christian songs which won't be everyone's bag (although most of them are more implicit than in your face) but he's a brilliant storytelling songwriter.
