Padiham FC

Spanked Skelmersdale 7-0 yesterday and up to 5th in the last play off spot.
Playing some very good football at the moment.
Would be brilliant if they could get into the play offs because with the momentum they have they could go and win it.

Not been up much this year, shame to say.
Hope to rectify that as soon as possible.
Good to hear that they're doing well.

Meanwhile over at Gigg Lane the wheels have come off the promotion wagon a bit. Only one point from the last nine so Bury are now chasing the two Wythenshawe clubs for the Auto spot.
Furthermore the Shakers played their last two home games behind closed doors following a crowd incident earlier in the season. The club are a bit circumspect about this but it looks like it was due to a couple of people racially abusing opponents. Bury appealed and lost. Imagine if that punishment happened at the top level.
Padiham could end up facing Bury in front of a vast crowd for that level as their home average attendance is over 3500.
Exciting times.

I think they’ve left it too late. Still teams around them with about seven games in hand.
Shocking start to the season going to cost them.

A bit unfair that as I don't think anyone expected them to be as high as they are.
The start was probably more expected than the middle.

I’m not sure what’s unfair about saying they had a shocking start to the season when they only won three of their opening fifteen league games.

How many draws? Points at that stage?
If it was a Man City/Liverpool type it would be shocking.
A team that usually finishes bottom half, not so.

The playing budget they have compared to a lot of the teams in the league they shouldn’t be finishing bottom half.

You will know more than me about budgets in the league, but I got the impression the likes of Colne and Barlick paid players far more Padiham did.
Last time I spoke to a couple on the committee at the football club (last summer) they were very happy with the manager and him not spending anywhere near his budget.
Maybe they have upped win bonuses this season? And reaped the rewards?

Barlick certainly don’t and Colne will have done the last few years but that’s obviously because they were in a higher league. Now they are in the same division and their main backer has left them then they aren’t paying more than Padiham.

The players at that level will change clubs for an extra £1 a game it’s all false when the money runs out back to an average team money spoiling non league football just like the premiership

There’s a few in the NWC who actually have agents now!
One of the Padiham lads a year or two ago left for an extra £10 a week. He failed to realise that he was having to travel another 120 miles a week to get to matches and training for his new club.

Colne won't be paying silly wages anymore. Last chairman left things in a bit of a mess so they're trying to run things properly and get back on an even keel.

All not well with the fans at Bury either.
After the merger the guy who was made chairman, he was part of the phoenix club set up, refuses to acknowledge they are now Bury FC (the original entity) and keeps all branding at the club as AFC Bury.

He seemed to have sold their fans on some crazy idea about a 4,000 capacity ground.
They were never going to get planning permission for it at their existing ground and he didn’t seem interested in relocating.

I think 400 of the 461 were in the clubhouse today

Was understandably rammers. Padiham raced into a 4-0 half time lead yet strangely West Didsbury looked decent when they got going. Padiham just a bit too quick for the West Didsbury defence. By the second half the pitch was heavy and a few subs by both teams and it got scrappy with West Didsbury looking the better team without really threatening much. Padiham were either tired or seemed content to sit on their lead.
Enjoyable stuff despite the weather.

Massive game next Saturday, Padiham at home again to Chadderton who are on the same points.
Padiham beat them 4-1 away just over 2 weeks ago.

Division above the Counties is Northern PL West (Clitheroe level)
Then Northern Premier League (Bamber Bridge level)
Then National League North (Chorley level)
Then National League

Who would pay for that?
No chance they get a new ground or promoted 3 or 4 levels, it would ruin the club.

How would promotion ruin the club? What is the point of a club if they just exist and nothing more?

Because at non league level costs will increase in three different ways. First there are possible ground improvements that the club may have to make for the next level, second there are additional travel costs as the team will have to travel further distances third there will be increased player costs as they will need to attract better quality players who are willing to travel those further distances.
Usually gates don’t increase following promotion and in some cases fall off as teams win fewer games at a higher level and there are fewer local “derbies”.

Take Marske United for example, promoted to NPL, just stayed up last season however this season resigned from the league for reasons stated in the quote above. Marske are hoping to reappear further down the pyramid next season.

Costs would multiply.
Volunteers would need to increase massively.
Ground improvements would be costly.
No real scope for crowds to increase.

We went up a division quite a while since and had to do a lot of ground improvements then.If memory serves me right we came back down after one season and did more harm to the club than good.Having said that I would like to see them promoted talking to the powers that be at theclub they say they could just about to afford promotion at a push. But as already said it's a good day up there with friendly banter.Ifanyone is at a loose end this coming Saturday get yourself up it's half price entry for season ticket holders and you can have a pint while you watch the game which promises to be a cracker 4th against 5th

Spare a thought for Charnock Richard FC in Padiham’s division. They have 12 games to play in the next 27 days due to postponements.
They’ll need a new tumble dryer at the end of April.

Colne got promoted to the league above for 2 or 3 years and don't think it really did them any favours. Having to pay players more on crowds of 300 just wasn't sustainable.
