Club or country

Post by ArmchairDetective » Tue Mar 19, 2024 8:11 am

The age old question of club or country is doing the rounds on twitter. Thought I'd see where people are at on here.

1) Would you rather Burnley stay up this season or England (or your alternative country) win the Euros this summer? Choose one.

2) Would you rather Burnley win the FA Cup next season or England (or your alternative country) win the next World Cup? Choose one.

These are separate hypothetical scenarios where your answer to question 1 shouldn't impact your answer to question 2 and vice versa i.e. it's not an acca

I’m always club before country however I’d be tempted to go for England to win the Euros this summer and we be relegated(I’ve not enjoyed the PL this season and don’t want a repeat next year). My answer to two though would definitely be an FA Cup win.

I would rather win at Chelsea than England win the Euro's or World Cup

I say that as someone who has been to World Cups & Euro's and qualifiers all over in the past.

Burnley always.

International football isn't the same as in the 60s, 70s.
The format of competitions.
The number of International breaks and friendlies.
Their impact on the league programme, and the potential to dilute the league even further.
The money grabbing attitude of FIFA and UEFA.
Southgate and his blinkered approach to team selection and tactics.

I think I'd rather do the gardening

Burnley
Burnley

And it’s not even close. In fact I’d not bat an eyelid if they announced they were scrapping international football if it meant an end to these awful international breaks.

Its got to be England every time for me. Maybe if it was a choice between Burnley going out of the football League like we nearly did in 1990 or England not qualifying for the Euros or World Cup then in that scenario maybe Burnley would just edge it.

What about littering the streets with Burnley flags made in Blackburn, or with pie wrappers made in Preston?

The best thing about those cheap little Made in China flags is that I can post photos of my car decked out in them for my three thousand+ friends to see on Facebook. I know they litter our streets, roads, and especially the motorways, but just think of the joys they bring.

The best thing about those flags is that if you park your grey car in a car park with a thousand other cars, 900 of them also grey, then you can put a little flag up to help you find it later.

I don't particularly object to relegation this time, but definitely Burnley to win the FA Cup ahead of England winning anything.

Club every time.
There’s so many international fixtures these days that they almost become meaningless ( and, I guess, some are). I don’t believe that playing for your country means the same as it did in the past when there were fewer matches.

17th in the Premier League whoopy do!

England win the Euros, we get relegated, then romp to another Championship next season.

Burnley win the FA Cup for the second question. I’d actually take a League/FA Cup win and relegation tbh

As for the here and now, relegation and England to win the Euros.

Any time else, the club every time - no contest.

Who pays their wages and has invested a lot of time and money in the players anyway ?

Just money spinners now - not unlike the Premier League I suppose.

not just because england are useless ultimatley in the fag end of tournaments but more for the fact the red top style media sun and talk sport try to whip up a false frenzy amongst supporters with no merit.
a long line of teams and managers just cannot buy a tournament win.
its fine for the fans of lower league dregs who seem to cling to the national team, but nothing comes near the passion for Burnley. international breaks are tiresome irritations just getting in the way of proper football.

Used to watch England all over, I’d probably been to over 30 England games by the time I was in my early 20’s including some big tournament games.

Great years but lost interest and barely watch games on tv now, the bug does occasionally come back during tournaments and I’m considering taking my daughter to see if I can get back in to the habit.

Currently Burnley first but some of the best trips of my life have been watching England in the sun and mixing with random club fans for a chat and a beer.

1. Burnley stay up

2. Burnley win FA Cup

It ain’t even close…. So many disappointing tournaments (false dawns) with England, culminating with the current ‘destroyer of all things positive’ ensuring we continue to lose the big games from winning positions. If this frightened buffoon was in charge of Brazil in the ‘70 World Cup, they’d have gone out in the group stage….

Silly question , only one answer and it isn’t England .
They are just a team that plays down south with a subservient manager who tows the F. A. line
