What's happened to the roof?

Post by Jel » Tue Apr 02, 2024 8:26 pm

Watching on TV, they have cleared out a whole section of the lower Jimmy Mac. What's happened, where do the fans in that section now go?
And what a cracking goal from JBL!

Apparently there's a strut hanging dangerously from the roof.

Most fans moved to the Fanzone to watch the 2nd half, hopefully with free food and drink to compensate for the disruption.

Some fans have found spare seats in hospitality or elsewhere in the stand apparently.

I would think there's space in the disability stands too

Apparently they’ve already contacted Gifton Noel-Williams, and he’s going to head over tomorrow and take a few penalties…. Said he’ll have that bit of metal down in no time. That’s what you call efficient.

I don't understand why they didn't get Muric to knock it into shape at half time.

If that strut is in danger of falling from that height I'm surprised they felt they only needed to evacuate one block really.

They had the seats out and cherry pickers working around that area only a week or so ago.

Are they allowed to screen the game in the fanzone when it's not on TV?

We got moved into the North Stand lower from down there. The amount of absolute brain-dead morons refusing to move is astounding. They were doing it for safety reasons and people refusing. People who should old enough to know better. Took the police to come to make some of them move.

This particularly stood out for me. Absolutely no need for some of the shocking behaviour from some fans. Fans being asked to move, for their own safety. Just imagine if that had fallen and they hadn't been moved.

The language I heard given towards the stewards was embarrassing and some people should be ashamed of themselves.

Before matches, I’m sure that the ground safety officer and team are obliged to carry out safety checks. Surely, surely, surely one of the very first things you do is to look up? If that was there before the game kicked off, that is negligent in my opinion. Of course, it could have come loose at any point during the game, but to have missed that before the game started… Not good… Not good at all.

The safety officer was quick on the scene, the stewards did a cracking job despite the numb skulls trying to make it hard work for them. It was a swift quick reaction I thought. I'm surprised they didn't move more, but I think they can be praised for how it was dealt with

Think it was one of Vitinho's or Taylor's attempted crosses that dislodged it in fairness

As someone who was in that block, the management of this initially was absolutely farcical.

Firstly, how wasn't this spotted earlier? Surely it didn't just happen at about 8pm?

Then sending one lad who looked about 15 but was all ten men with his earpiece in, effing and blinding at people who had no idea what was going on because they couldn't see the problem from underneath, was very much not the way to have dealt with this.

Telling people to go to the concourse and watch on the screens, without really explaining why, didn't exactly help.

The game should gave been stopped and a proper announcement made, most people would have then understood and moved. The conversation I had with a supervising steward was ridiculous.

Once on the concourse they then started telling people to go to the fanzone because 'there's a big screen there'. Plenty just went home and a few stayed put on the concourse, fortunately we got rehoused upstairs. No idea if the fanzone lot got back in.

I get that this was obviously an unexpected situation but it was so poorly managed. It could have been so easily a bad outcome if the metal had fallen on someone.

In that block too and that’s exactly how I saw it.
After half time they decided they wanted to move another block. Absolutely no idea why - it was miles away from the piece of metal hanging down. There were fans to the right who had been left who were nearer to it.
They told us they had tickets in the north stand for us. Why did they wait till after half time when the game had already kicked off to make this ludicrous decision.
The whole thing was handled very poorly - but more importantly we should never have been put in that position in the first place.

I mean, people can be involved in the same incident and have a different experience of it, seems a normal thing to happen.

My conversation with the supervisor went:

"Can you tell us what we need to do please, do we need to move?"

"We're just doing what we're told."

"Well can you tell us what that is?"

"We're doing as we're told."

"OK but this doesn't look good do we need to move

"We're just ......"

We just made the decision ourselves and went. Long before the cops turned up btw.

Point is that it's no wonder there were people not understanding the gravity of the situation in the initial stages as it wasn't being explained across the whole block. The game should have been stopped and it all would have been done in minutes.

The club has already sent out an email to those seats impacted tonight offering a credit towards season tickets or other tickets due to being moved out of our seats.
They couldn’t have acted much quicker so credit where credits due for that.

Yeah good on them. I actually think they managed it pretty well once they'd got people to move, no blame on the stewards, they did well in the face of a few narky gets as well.

Maybe it was a deceptive view, but from where I was sat (just in front of the tvs on the Longside), the loose strut appeared to be hanging also over the lower end of upper tier. Surprised that they did not also clear those people as well.

It was over the lower tier only. I ended up a few rows back upstairs so could see it from there.

From the upper tier it looked like a piece of the composite cladding had sheared off at one end, presumably cut edge corrosion or similar. Wouldn’t weigh much if that’s what it was and given the lack of any wind it wouldn’t have drifted far, but falling from height and sharp, it was a sensible decision, just carried out with the usual blind panic.

It was about as close to Nori when he fell over as O'Shea was, I can see why they were concerned.

First game I've managed to get to this season with my lad and missed half the game including both goals. Even missed out on my half time pint and lads chocolate which I'd prepaid for.........

On top of that the M62 was closed on the way home so had to detour through Brighouse - arrived home at 1am.

Email from the club saying they will credit the ticket towards a ticket in the future.... Would've preferred the cash tbh.

Fair play to the staff for getting us back into empty seats later

Absolutely disgraceful if work had been done on that exact part of the roof very recently
Apparently unlike incidents with away fans in home seats the “ safety officer” was on the scene quickly.
Too many times this season “ safety” has brought the name of the club into disrepute

Wtf are you moaning about? An incredibly rare and bizzare situation affecting a small number of fans who have been re-inbursed.

You say "safety" in a way which alludes the club were making up the situation, when the other 20,000 of us in the stadium could see it.

Travelling home after evening games for those who live a distance away from Burnley is often a challenge. Accidents, motorway closures/restrictions often result in getting into bed in the early hours of the morning. It’s getting worse season by season.

We usually have a slow trip up Belvedere Rd and Eastern Avenue heading away from the Tennis Club Car Park but last night was smooth and very quick, as we were back in LP at 10.30 ... We couldn't believe how quick we got away last night (and yes we did stay untill the final whistle :-) ...)

You must have got lucky. That was the same time I got back to Brierfield.

Must have taken us 30mins to get from the tennis club to the Ford garage

....... Has anybody been credited for U18 tickets? I have for my adults but not my sons..... Also - what is the point in giving credit for future tickets when there's no tickets left for home games. I know I'm moaning and they did what they had to do but I've struggled to get tickets all season and this was me and the lads first game this season.

We couldn't believe it wilks ... Usually on a Saturday it takes ages just to get up to the Roundabout near the Hospital on Casterton Ave
We also left at the final whistle and slowly walked back to the car, we noticed your car was still there Bosscat. We were surprised how well the traffic was moving, usually there is a tail back up the side of Boundary Mill bear Lloyds garage but there was nothing, we were home in Skipton not long after 10:15 p.m.
