Prague and Vienna Advice - Short stay

Post by what_no_pies » Fri Apr 12, 2024 1:21 pm

I'm off to Prague and then Vienna to watch the sublime King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in May.

I arrive in Prague alone on the Thursday late afternoon and will have 24 hours in Prague before 2 friends will join me on the Friday. We then have another 24 hours before we go to the first gig on the Saturday evening at Karlin Forum.

Sunday morning train to Vienna and then another gig at
Arena Wien that evening. We fly back on the Tuesday afternoon so have a full day in Vienna together.

Would really like any ideas for what to do, places to eat/drink, any tips or ideas from anyone that's been to either City before.

Looking forward to reading through any suggestions.

Happy to advise. Are you beer and stew people or cocktails and tasting menu people?. I'll direct you accordingly

Should try to get a match in somewhere. Last time I was in Vienna I saw Austria Wien play, the standard wasn't great but the atmosphere was brilliant.

Vienna really is a beautiful city though. Worth getting a rental bike from the side of the road and just getting around to soak up the views. You'll need a few pennies though, I recall thinking it was very expensive

Hope you enjoy your trip! :D

The food in Vienna is awful - unless you like pork, in which case you’ll love it. It’s an expensive place, best visited for the Christmas markets

Tivoli Gardens feels like the thing to see in Vienna tbh. Schnitzel will be pricey but its the home of it, so has to be done.

Watch out for pickpockets in Prague especially on public transport.

This place is very different in Prague.

Your drinks are delivered directly to your table by train

Probably no worse than any other City....We had a great time in Prague, Rome was another story with attempted bag snatches & pickpockets.

A standard for when ive got anyone visiting. Definitely worth a reservation, and use the notes box to ask for a table where the train comes on to the table, rather than stopping alongside.

Kozicka in Prague. Just off the main square. Best "locals" bar I went to. Still about £2 for .40cl beer.

Been a while. Zizkov, you been, if so is it still a "bar" more than a restaurant? Seems to be.

Hi Zizkov.

We're off to see a Psychadelic Rock band that turn their hand to any number of different genres of music including Jazz, Blues, Techo/Synth, Thrash Metal, Soft Rock, Garage, Surf, Folk, Prog and more. The same could be said for our tastes really.

We'll enjoy a few beers and local food in unassuming surroundings but will probably take in a speakeasy or cocktail bar and food somewhere a bit more upmarket for a change/treat at some stage along the way.

New and or unique experiences / traditional local / unmissable sightseeing (castle?) / something off the beaten tourist path perhaps.

We're all mid 30's-40 so can get around on foot but if there's another way to see the city and learn a bit of history then we might go for some sort of tour to make the most of a short stay there. Probably prefer to avoid the obvious generic tours though in favour of a more unique experience if such a thing was available.

Also if you know of anywhere to recommend for breakfast we're staying just south of the Old Town.

Finally, if you can help, want to be mindful of being alone for the first 24 hours. I'm not nervous about it in the slightest but if there's somewhere I'm likely to get a warmer welcome then I'll favour that fir obvious reasons.

I like Prague, fabulous city which I've visited many times ( the last being October last year for a PJ Harvey gig )

Vienna however, well that means nothing to me

I went to Prague for a stag doo last year, cracking city!

Take a bit extra than anticipated (I fell victim to the Prague is dirt cheap talks), just like a normal city really.

A beer around the clock square is roughly £15...we found an irish bar called Rocky O'Connors which was belting. Food was brill, service cracking and you got a free shot if you sounded like a strangled cat on kareoke

It's Michael Portillo and I'd hazard a guess he and Micahel Palin will have different tastes..........I may be wrong.

If you feeling hungry this place is unreal

https://ribsofprague.cz/home/

Be wary of meat sweats next day, very reasonably priced.

We visited last year for time in 10 years and was shocked at how expensive it has become. Although that Ribs of Prague is good value and well worth a visit

Making an itinerary of sorts now but leaving some gaps to just explore. Any other input still very welcome. Thanks for replies so far.

Prague...

My favourite steak restaurant in the world - u bila krava (book in advance necessary) - good prices for quality - https://maps.app.goo.gl/wNxuy8b3u51FXNZG9

Good pub near Charles Bridge - https://maps.app.goo.gl/YUTm3VTvZBvpvcRc8

I recommend during the day walking to the top of the park for a good view of the city, up there you can buy a coffee or a dark beer - https://maps.app.goo.gl/ND5sH8RdghKrucBXA (cash only)

This is the steak trio from u bila krava, with dauphinoise potatoes and the shallot sauce. It cost something ridiculously cheap like 30eur including a glass of red.

I've been lucky enough to see a lot of the world through my line of work and have eat all over the place... I can't recommend this restaurant enough, I go every time I visit Prague.
