Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
“We’ve had our opportunities ….but not taken them” - sums up the season quite well.
Some very poor teams at the bottom but we have rarely shone and, despite many abysmal referees’ decisions, fully deserve relegation, the game’s up.

I'd like to see a psychiatric report on each of the 4 who voted Muric man of the match.

Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
The Bellamy quotes about Muric weren't actually the most surprising thing he said post match. He still firmly believes we'll stop up!

Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
We do of course long for Heaton and Pope again, but they were incapable of playing the way we play (and City etc play). The fast distribution, the high defence and sweeper keeper.
I’m not convinced having them in our goal this season would have saved us.

My Dad has a joke, which goes something along the lines of if I go into hospital to get my knee looked at will I be able to play the piano afterwards? And the joke is that when the answer comes back 'yes, of course' he says 'oh good because I couldn't before'.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 8:00 pmWe do of course long for Heaton and Pope again, but they were incapable of playing the way we play (and City etc play). Heaton and Pope can't play like we play now, but then again we can't play like we play now that's the problem.

Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
I think it’s more than likely we’d have picked up an extra 5 or 6 points with Pope between the sticks this season. Whether or not that would have been enough I don’t know. Newcastle have certainly missed him.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 8:00 pmWe do of course long for Heaton and Pope again, but they were incapable of playing the way we play (and City etc play). I was talking to a couple of Mags recently and they believe the Pope injury derailed them as much as anything.

A relation who lives just outside Newcastle was telling me the Newcastle fans only realise just how good he is since his absence. The so called can't kick it straight obsession didn't bother them in the slightest.
Just how lucky were we ?

Very lucky.
Trafford and Muric aren't fit to lace Pope's boots... Or Heaton's for that matter.

Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
I think Pope is England’s best keeper. I just don’t think he is suited to our style. It would make us pedestrian at the back.
Would improve us with box dominance though, without doubt.
My point being, I’m not convinced we can afford to castigate Muric, who changes so much of our play for the better. Criticise the error for sure, I did, but not the keeper in general. I still think we would have stayed up if he had played all season.
The annoying thing about life though in many aspects, we will never know in matters such as this.

Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
Said this before, but Everton, despite their position, have the 4th best defensive record. Not a coincidence that their manager SD makes them not mess about at the back, but just hit it long to the likes of Calvert Lewin.
I too saw the reaction of Cullen and Brownhill when Brightons goal crept under Muric's studs. It was a case of "what the ...."
Our club really is an embarassment in so many areas

Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
Doesn’t Howe like to play quite a possession based style? Pope played the way he did here because he was told to. Excellent players are often pretty adaptable, which is what Pope is. I’m not saying his distribution is necessarily as good as Muric, but he certainly has enough about him to play out.

Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
And yet for all the doom we may just basically need to be within 2 points of Forest before the final game.
You can still point to refereeing decisions that would have kept us up and we are certainly a better team now than we were in August.
Some of the football in the first half against a team that’s played in Europe this year was very good.

Your point doesn’t make sense. The whole reason we are down here is because we are playing a crap system that is set up to fail.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 8:44 pmI think Pope is England’s best keeper. Why is it remotely beneficial to play worse keepers in a system we know isn’t going to work?
For what it’s worth Pope or Heaton are country miles ahead of both our keepers. Our drop off from them is comparable to Ferguson to Moyes.

Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
Your right about NF, but we need to get above Luton or Everton. Even then we'd have the PL fiddle factor/points deduction to be concerned about.Hibsclaret wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 9:03 pmAnd yet for all the doom we may just basically need to be within 2 points of Forest before the final game.

20687 ? Were they all watching on tv under the stands ?
Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
The problem is that (even if we accept that he changes our play for the better) it is still the play at the wrong end of the field. Changing our defensive passing from good to very good or excellent or out of this world, whatever we might like to call it, fine. But it isn;t leading to more goals. We have averaged 1 goal per game all season, and we have scored 6 in 5 under Muric. Kompany gave himself away a bit after the Everton game when he said we had been the better side in each of the last 6 games. It isn't true. We have only been "the better side" if you accept that football is all about passing and possession, and scoring goals is an incidental side effect.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 8:44 pmI think Pope is England’s best keeper. Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
Just reading that has highlight how this season has been
Even if both teams had played without keepers the score would have been 0-0
I can’t wait for this season to be over tbh.
I know we were spoiled last season, but to go from that to this has been so disappointing.

Re: REPORT: A tale of two keepers
Maybe VK is trying to persuade the Press, Supporters and Chairman that he is doing a much better job than he actually is. The problem has to be the Manager who chose the players and decides the team and the tactics Buck has to stop with him unless the board are interfering with his decisions which I very much doubtClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 1:25 pmBeyond disappointing really although we keep being told that we are playing better than what I think I’ve been watching.

A tale of two keepers - particularly one and another abysmal referee and VAR bloke - Jones.
