Hillsborough - 35 years

Hard to believe it is 35 years ago but 97 people lost their lives through the events of that day and many, many more had their lives affected forever.

Today, above all days, is to have those people in your thoughts.

A hell of a lot of youngsters on that list, the youngest was just 10 year's old and was the cousin of the future Liverpool and England star Steve Gerrard

Absolutely jam packed terraces were an accident waiting to happen for years and it was ridiculous and tragic that it took 97 people to die crushed in one before that was truly realised. I stood on numerous terraces, including the old Longside where the sway of the crowd and the unbelievable force of the crush of hundreds of bodies actually knocked the breath out of me. I can't really begin to imagine what what it was like being trapped on the Leppings Lane terraces that particular day, but I do know that at our semi final in 1974 I several times thought I was going to get crushed on there. So sad and so avoidable.

I was on the away end at Blackburn v Man City that day (4-0 to Rovers as a blip on City’s promotion charge). Can vividly remember people crowding the window of a Rumbelows or similar watching the footage unfolding. Towards the end of the game I remember there was a rumour that a stand had collapsed at Hillsborough.

35 years doesn't seem possible. There are no words even after this time. Watching football should be safe.

I always think Bradford, when Hillsborough comes up. Also an horrendous event with lives lost.

Whenever I think about it I cannot understand how that end of the ground had not been closed or modified by the authorities. I recall thinking that the design was flawed when I was there for the Newcastle semi in 1974. It truly was a disaster waiting to happen and unfortunately for Liverpool fans, they were the ones who suffered.
