Controlling the ball with the sole of the foot

Post by aggi » Wed Apr 17, 2024 10:30 am

I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering why Muric tried to control the ball with the sole of his foot on Saturday.

Seems it is a thing according to the Athletic. Used to try and draw the opposition out to pass through them

I didn't feel brave enough to venture into 350 posts on whether we should drop Muric where I guess it was linked.

Incredibly risky when you're the last man standing between the sticks. I'd get it more if Muric had received it at an angle but the pass had a direct path into the goal.

As a defender (of not a very high standard) myself, I always remember having it drummed into me, “if you need to pass it back to the keeper, don’t put it on target”.

All about the show now….

I dare say you weren't playing on a bowling green with a supposedly PL standard goalkeeper. The whole raison d'etre of picking Muric is that we're supposed to be able to pass to him.

I wonder if our goalkeeping coach will ask them to cut it out. Muric is skilful enough to trap the ball with the inside of his foot in a split second and then pass it.

Yeah, then some idiot acting centre back in oceans of space stops, looks round for ages instead of moving the ball forward and passes it back to him!!!

I’d hope he doesn’t have to.

If that’s how he feels comfortable controlling the ball, I’m fine with it, I must’ve watched him in 50 odd games and never seen his control be anything other than imperious.

I wouldn’t want our GK coach to be changing his game off the back of one error but I would hope that he might himself learn that when it’s ******* it down on the turf and he’s 6 yards from goal he might be better controlling it with the side of his foot.
