Joint Supplements
Since my age trundled over to 68 earlier, this month I've noticed a lot more pain in my joints and getting in and out of the car has become painful,I'm thinking of giving joint supplements a crack,I know we have a lot of old blokes on here who might be able to help with their experience of pain and supplements any recommendations?
At the moment I'm swithering towards.....
Bettervits
Glucosamine complex with MSM & Tumeric
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Re: Joint Supplements
None of them made any difference to me. I Took Glucosamine + other bits for a year to give it a fair chance. No noticeable effect whatsoever.
Might be different for others so just my experience.

Bit of information here.
I take glucosamine and tumeric with black pepper, as research seems to show they slow down cartilage degradation .

Re: Joint Supplements
Supplements can help mate but imperative that your diet is spot on as well.
Lots of food that we eat (processed, high in omega 6s/hydrogenated fats/sugar) is super inflammatory and can exacerbate joint pain; good diet + a good mobility routine and preferably some sort of resistance training and then they can certainly be beneficial.
Fish oil + turmeric is as good as anything really.

Re: Joint Supplements
I've been taking them for years.
Don't know how much good they are but I'm almost scared to stop in case they are working, even if not particularly well.
Exercise is still the best thing to counter the effects of ageing, IMO.

Re: Joint Supplements
Glucosamine, for me, was a gradual build thing. The first 6 months or so I was going to sack it.
I've now been taking it for 30 years and I believe it has saved me from a whole load of grief (including being able to make a living playing the guitar).
Osteo arthritis.

Re: Joint Supplements
I was on a pre-retirement course where they recommended everybody present took Glucosamine. I was only 50 and fit for my age. I gave them a go but soon ditched them as I came out in spots. This was a good while back so I’d hope they have improved them.

Re: Joint Supplements
For those of you who aren't yet too old, who aren't suffering joint pain or if you're still young(ish) and starting to feel twinges in knees and other joints here is what I've started in order to try and stave off joint problems later in life:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7B9p8AwSEw
It comes with warnings and plenty of "do nots" but the science and theory behind it appeals to me and I'm hoping there will be benefits in the future.

Historically I've suffered terribly with Plantar, but some shoe inserts suggested by GP changed it literally overnight. I have them in all my footwear now.Rowls wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2024 7:26 pmFor those of you who aren't yet too old, who aren't suffering joint pain or if you're still young(ish) and starting to feel twinges in knees and other joints here is what I've started in order to try and stave off joint problems later in life:

Re: Joint Supplements
Most supplements are actually useless, even though they say.. e.g. (400% of recommended dose per day) etc, the body doesn't recognize them as such...they can't be metabolized & the liver is left with the job of removing them, there's zero benefit. It's a hugely profitable industry & they can basically claim anything they want........most of it is snake oil.dougcollins wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2024 7:12 pmAs somebody mentioned earlier in the thread, always buy good quality supplements.

Re: Joint Supplements
I'm 70 now and have taken a Glucosamine + Omega 3 supplement for donkeys years and so far so good. But I also go to the gym three times a week and do classes involving a lot of stretching and leg exercises such as lunging and squats. It's working because at this time of year I can play golf at least three times a week without the dreaded aches and pains. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Re: Joint Supplements
By the way, around four years ago, I began taking the recommended daily amount of vitamin D. Around 18 months later, I started getting spots and rashes flaring up on my face. I put this down to all sorts of things, like washing powder, soap, sunscreen, shaving foam, hand gel and certain foodstuffs. Spent a bit of money switching to different brands and on cleansing lotions etc in an attempt to eliminate what was causing it, but to no avail. Then I stopped taking vitamin D and the spots and rashes stopped too.
I have no idea why I didn't think of this in the first place. Maybe because I had been taking the supplement for a year and a half without any issues. Funny thing is that I didn't require it in the first place. I'd read articles online about victim D deficiency and the benefits of taking a daily supplement, however, I get enough daylight in the spring and summer months and also have a good diet, so I didn't really need it in the first place.

Re: Joint Supplements
Last year I started to get real pains in my knee and got them x-rayed to be told it was the inevitable arthritis. It was so bad I could barely sleep at night despite being very active at the age of 73. I started taking a heavy dose of Glucosamine & Chrondroitin but did not see the improvement. For the past 6 months however I have taken an 1800mg of magnesium compounds daily and the improvement is remarkable. It has to be the Glycinate 3-in-1 made up of Magnesium Glycinate, Malate & Citrate. Google it to see the benefits.Magnesium is also very god for your muscles and nervous system and has cured my restless leg syndrone as I was about to fall asleep

Re: Joint Supplements
Magnesium is also recommended for controlling Depression. For joint pain and tendinitis (particularly in the legs and arms/shoulders - legacy of sporting injuries of my youth), I find a good half hour of stretching exercises before bed also helps immensely with tired legs does as much as the supplements I take :- fish oils, iron, vit B6warksclaret wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2024 10:32 amLast year I started to get real pains in my knee and got them x-rayed to be told it was the inevitable arthritis. Re: Joint Supplements
A good glucosamine with chondritin & MSM along with a good omega 3 fish oil capsule . Nothing that ever calls itself “ one a day “ is of any use when you’re talking about Glucu/Chond etc either You need at least an active ration 2000mg /400mg/150mg daily , 2-3 “ high strength “ tablets .
You’ll also need a strong fish oil EPA/DHA ratio around 1000mg/400mg ration . About 2/3 capsules . Good added health benefits too with omega 3.
Also a good Cal/Mag/Zinc ( all in one ) is very cheap and an important add in .
Good supplements aren’t cheap but taking low dose cheap stuff is generally useless . The above is of course for wear and rear /oesteo/knees etc NOT rheumatoid

Re: Joint Supplements
Hi Steve1956
I didn't post my honest advice earlier. My honest advice would be that the evidence for supplements is going to be mixed at best. I healthy, varied diet should give your body everything it needs.
The best thing you might be able to do might be a lot trickier than the idea of taking supplements. You're best to seek out proper medical advice but you might want to look into weight loss, working on muscle strength and other postural / muscular-skeletal approaches.
These aren't easy answers but they might potential be a far more effective than anything a supplement might achieve.
