RIP Taffy

He reffed a school game me and Goody played in, he was brilliant with us and what an honour it was for us young lads (I think we were 15 at the time)

Sad news indeed

That's so, so sad. Like many of us of a "certain age", I remember him tearing down the wing in the early and mid 70s when he was in his pomp and I even remember him coming back and doing exactly the same for Derby who were heading to the league title the season after he was sold. Great player for Burnley in his first spell, in a great team. Great memories.

I also got chance to play against him in the Burnley Sunday League, think he turned out for a few weeks for the Dugdale Arms if I remember correctly.

A true legend of our club, RIP Taffy

Wonderful footballer. At his peak he was amongst the very best in Europe. I am sure those who were fortunate to see him in the Claret and Blue will talk about him for a while yet. RIP Taff

So sorry to read this.

Rest in peace Taffy.

He was before my time, although I might have seen him in a game I was too young to remember the players.

All the generation before me loved him and was the player they all talked about.

Gutted.....Leighton James one of my Burnley heroes πŸ˜ͺ
Coached us a few times whilst at school at Fearns in the early 70s when I idolised him.
Fantastic footballer, one of my greatest memories of him was up at Celtic in the Anglo Scottish Cup when a few of us went up there.....took the p*ss out out of their full back Danny Magrain who I seem to remember was a well established Scottish international.
God bless you Super Taff and your family and friends.
RIP

Like many on here, I saw him play in the mid/late 70's in what was the old First/Second division alongside the likes of Alan Stevenson, Peter Noble and Brian Flynn.
A tremendous player to watch and all older Clarets will feel sadness with this news.

A dark day for all who know him or watched him in action. When Dougie Collins got the ball and 'stroked' it out to Leighton on the left wing I always felt something was likely to happen. So did the opposition because it was usually at least two players trying to stop him. Thankyou, Leighton. RIP

So sorry to hear this. My first sporting hero when I was a kid and first started watching Burnley. I had my Grandma sew the number 11 on my first Burnley shirt in his honour. I guess it's a sign of getting older yourself when your heroes pass away. I will be raising a glass later this evening.
