Two Premier League players arrested over alleged rape

Two Premier League footballers have been arrested in connection with an alleged rape.
The pair – both aged 19 – were released on bail after being interviewed by police.
The players are at the same club, which declined to comment on the allegations.
“Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape,” a police spokesperson said.
“A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape.
“Both men have since been released on police bail.”
The allegations were first reported by The Sun newspaper, which said the alleged attack took place on Friday.
It is not known if the players have been suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation.
The Premier League introduced mandatory sexual consent training for players and staff in 2022 following high-profile incidents involving top-flight footballers.
In November a Panorama investigation found Premier League clubs had continued to play two footballers, and kept a boss in post, while knowing they were under police investigation for sexual or domestic violence.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have taken the extraordinary step of announcing they are not the Premier League club who had two players arrested at the weekend following an alleged rape.
I just wonder, with no actual knowledge, if this is because it's a Midlands club.

Does saying “Premier League players” mean they have played in a premier league game, or just that they are at a premier league club?

Totally agree. Ask former LA Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer.
If they are guilty, full force of the law should be applied. But hopefully the facts will be given time to come out before their lives, not to mention careers are ruined.

It's alright tho cos the court of brown envelopes and expensive lawyers will get them off.

It’s because the original article suggested that the attack took place on Friday and one of the players was then arrested at their ground on Saturday. Luton, Sheffield and Wolves were the teams at home on Saturday. I think of that group Wolves were the only team to have two 19 yo’s in their squad.
If you include Sunday it was Everton, Villa, Palace and Fulham.

Ched Evans was found not guilty after doing time which arguably wrecked his career.He has recovered to play lower league football with the Nobbers but never to the lofty heights he could have attained.Mendy is now playing in France after a lengthy spell out undergoing trial to be found not guilty.

Another media created vacuum for people to fill with speculation that damages the reputation of innocent people. I have already seen various names appear online and it feels like fans pointing fingers at rival clubs with, no factual information to back it up.

Totally agree. Parliament has considered the idea of anonymity for those accused of rape on a number of occasions over the years. However, the law has never changed and previous Governments have gone back on their word that they would extend anonymity in rape cases to defendants.

Because it is a tabloid newspaper whose main functions are titilation and accusation to sell papers/gets clicks for advertisers. It works as this thread (and social media) proves; just need the BBC to jump on and several Sun employees get to raise their profile and get their faces onto TV.

On the last discussion, when a footballer was accused, I said they shouldn't put themselves in a position where they can be accused and perhaps behave with a modicum of common sense, likewise women who hang around/ target clubs that footballers frequent or get chatted up by them shouldn't leave themselves vulnerable and use some common sense.

If you are male, have you ever tried to begin to understand what it must feel like for a woman who's raped?
I feel it's much better concentrating on that anything else. Just my opinion, mind.

Trying to guess and speculate over something as serious is this is really, really poor.
Imagine how you'd feel if it was you or someone close to you that was casually getting their name thrown about like this when they were completely innocent?
It's not fair on any potential victim either.
I really wish we could just let the authorities get on with it instead of fuelling this TMZ style sh1t.

There have been so many of these over the years. The first I recall was Mark Wright on a pre-season tour of Sweden.
I’m sure there are others but the only one I remember with a guilty result was, as mentioned above, Ched Evans and he was subsequently aquitted.
I wouldn’t read to much into it until you see a guilty verdict.

I agree, however I have also seen the impact on the accused having known somebody that was falsely accused of rape
What he went through for over a year had, and still has and an enormous impact on his life
